M. Basketball: James Herman

James Herman

Associate Head Coach Varsity/Head JV Coach
Alma Mater: Southern Wesleyan University - 1999
  E-mail: jherman@swu.edu

James Herman enters his third year as the Associate Head Coach at Southern Wesleyan University for the men's basketball program; however, he is no stranger to the university.

Herman graduated from SWU in 1999 and started coaching immediately with the SWU women's basketball program under then head coach Ron Ellison.  Herman then moved to Anderson University and was an assistant under Doug Novak with the men's team. Herman played both baseball and basketball while in school at Southern Wesleyan.

Two years of coaching in the collegiate ranks helped prepare Herman for his seven year stint with Abbeville High School.  While at Abbeville, Herman served as an Assistant for two years under FC Sandlin before, taking over the Panther Basketball program that won 2 Region Championships, 3 Region Runner-ups, and 6 Playoff appearances including 1 appearance in the Upper-State Championship.

During Coach Herman’s first two years at Southern Wesleyan University he has guided the men's junior varsity team to back to back winning records.  These were the first two winning seasons for the young junior varsity program that began in 2003.  The 2008-2009 season included a win over Caldwell Community College who was ranked  #7 Junior College team in the Country.

The recruiting efforts of Coach Herman have helped the Warriors land the 2009 SSAC Freshman of the year, and Nick Lagroone who made the 2009 SSAC All-Conference Team as a Sophomore.  Herman takes pride in learning the recruiting ropes from Coach Wimphrie as they rebuild the Warrior program back to a conference and regional power.

Herman recently graduated in 2007 with a Masters in Sport Science from the United States Sports Academy.

James and his wife Julie have five children in Jameson 10, Julian 9, Jaden 6, Jacie 4 and JJ 2.
