Southern Wesleyan Wins First Conference Game of the Season

Tigerville, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan wins first Conference Carolinas game of the season against the North Greenville University Crusaders in a final score of 5-2.

The Warriors recorded six hits in the win over the Crusaders.  Conner Ewing led the team with two hits including a double and his second home run of the season.  Three Warriors had RBIs in the win.  Ewing and Quinton Bent each had two RBIs while Jason Moldenhauer had one.  John Garrett stole a base during the game.

Mike Batten started the game for the Warriors and went eight innings while allowing only four hits and no runs.  Batten had 10 strikeouts while facing thirty-two batters to get this second win of the season.  Jarrett Joyner came in to close the game for the Warriors while allowing two hits and two runs.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan struck first in the debate against the North Greenville University Crusaders in the top of the fifth inning.  Conner Ewing led off the inning by doubling to right center.  Alec Hrynda was hit by a pitch to get to first base.  Ewing and Hrynda advanced on a wild pitch, and then a ground out by Jason Moldenhauer allowed Hrynda to advance to third and brought Ewing home to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.  Andrew Falgiano then lined out to first base to bring Quinton Bent up to bat.  Bent tripled to right center to allow Hrynda to come home and give Southern Wesleyan a 2-0 lead before DiMarkus Sanders struck out swinging.

In the top of the sixth, Southern Wesleyan brought the game to 4-0.  John Garrett reached first base on an error.  Conner Ewing homered to left field to bring Garrett home.  In the top of the seventh, the Warriors struck again when Quinton Bent reached first base on a fielder's choice that brought Jason Moldenhauer home to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead over the Crusaders.

North Greenville University countered in the bottom of the ninth inning.  A. Plunkett walked and then A. Frazier hit into a double play to get both runners out on the play.  However, W. Single singled on a bunt and then advanced to second on a throwing error.  Single advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home to score on an error that allowed B. Hill to reach first.  R. Brown walked to move Myers to second and then a single by C Scolamier allowed Myers to cross home plate.  The Warriors won the game 5-2.


What's Next

The Warriors will return to North Greenville on Saturday, February 25 to take on the Crusaders at noon and 3 pm.  They will then travel to North Georgia on March 1.
