Southern Wesleyan Split Double Header Versus Trinity Baptist

Jacksonville, Fla – Southern Wesleyan split to the Trinity Baptist Eagles on Saturday. The Warriors fell in game one 10-1 and then defeated the Eagles 15-0 in game two.

The Warriors had four hits in the first game with Quinton Bent, Will Pitts, Bryson Fowler and Devin Patrick each having solo hits.  Pitts had the lone RBI to bring in Sean Sutay as the lone run.  Both Pitts and Fowler recorded stolen bases.  Josh Antwine started in the first game of the afternoon.  Antwine pitched 3.2 innings while striking out five.  Cole Standifer, Josh Core and Tyler Parry came in to pitch in relief.

Southern Wesleyan posted 14 hits in the second game of the day with Timo Schau leading the team with three hits.  Schau was followed by four players with two hits apiece.  Schau, Jarred Jones and Julio Justo all had doubles in the game and Jones posted the first home run of the season for the Warriors.  Jarred Jones led the team in runs and RBIs with four of each.  The Warriors posted 12 walks with Jones leading the team with two.  Southern Wesleyan had six stolen bases with Quinton Bent leading the team with two.  Bent was followed by Ty King Richards, Timo Schau, Jarred Jones and Conner Ewing each with one stolen base each.  Jarred Jones started for the Warriors, pitching four innings while striking out nine batters.  Jackson Fischer and Aaron Wimpey came in to pitch in relief, striking out a combined four batters.

"Another solid effort on the mound in the final game of the series.  Jarred Jones pitched really well and our pen with Jackson Fischer and Aaron Wimpey finished for us.  Bats came around in the final game as well which helped us win the series."

 

How It Happened

Game One

Trinity Baptist struck first as David Quevedo was brought in on a double by Bryan Lopez to take a 1-0 lead.  They continued to extend their lead, scoring a solo run in the fourth, six runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth innings.

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the seventh inning.  Sean Sutay, pinch hitting for Julio Justo, reached first place on an error.  With one on, Will Pitts singled down the left field line to bring Sutay in to score.  However, the lone run in the seventh inning was not enough as Trinity Baptist won the game 10-1.

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second game strong as Timo Schau singled.  Schau came in to score as Jarred Jones doubled to center field.  Quinton Bent followed with a single to bring in Jones.  Conner Ewing singled and then Bent advance to second.  On an infield pop fly off the bat of Julio Justo, Ewing and Bent advanced to second and third bases.  With runners on second and third, Devin Patrick singled to driving in the third run of the inning to put the Warriors ahead 3-0.

Ty King Richards singled to shallow center and then stole second base.  With one on, Timo Schau singled to the infield to advance King Richards to third base.  Jarred Jones followed with a three run home run to deep right to put Southern Wesleyan on top 6-0.

In the third inning, the Warriors put two more runs on the board.  Ty King Richards walked and then advanced to third on an error.  Timo Schau hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in King Richards.  With two outs, Jarred Jones reached on a walk and then stole second base.  Quinton Bent singled to shallow left-center to bring Jones in and put the Warriors ahead 8-0.

Southern Wesleyan continued to distance themselves from Trinity Baptist in the top of the fifth inning.  Timo Schau doubled to center and then stole third.  Jarred Jones walked to put runners on the corners with one out.  A wild throw by Brandon Dean allowed Schau to score and advance Jones to third.  Quinton Bent walked and then Conner Ewing singled to bring Jones across home plate.  A double down the left field line by Julio Justo allowed both Bent and Ewing to score.  With a runner on third base, Sean Sutay singled to shallow right to bring Justo in.

In the seventh inning, Julio Justo led off with a walk and then advanced to second as Will Pitts walked.  Sean Sutay walked to load the bases and bring Kole Rogers up to bat.  With one out Rogers walked to bring in one run and keep the bases loaded.  Timo Schau was hit by a pitch to bring in the final run of the game to put the Warriors up 15-0 to win the game.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will host their home opener on February 13 as they take on the Mars Hill Lions at 4 p.m.  They will remain at home on February 15-16 as they take on the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers.
