Warriors Challenge but Unable to Pass Wolves

Newberry, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Newberry Wolves in a 10-7 final score.

The Warriors posted nine hits in the loss with Quinton Bent and Conner Ewing leading the team with two hits each.  Bent, Ewing and Sawyer Price all doubled during the game.  Julio Justo and Bent each recorded homeruns.  Southern Wesleyan had seven RIBs with both Bent and Justo recording two each.  Jarred Jones and Nolan Steevens each walked two times in the loss.

Southern Wesleyan recorded seven strikeouts during the loss to Newberry.  Tanner Glass started the game for the Warriors and went 3.1 innings while striking out one batter.  TJ McEvilly, Vinny Adams, Bryson Fowler and Josh Core all came in to pitch in relief.  Adams and Fowler led the team with two strikeouts each.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan jumped out first in the top of the first inning.  Jarred Jones singled with two outs.  With one on, Julio Justo hit a home run to left field to put the Warriors ahead 2-0.  However, the lead was short lived as the Wolves put two runs on the board to tie the game.

Newberry took the lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge, regaining the lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Tanner Glass reached on a fielding error by the shortstop.  Quinton Bent followed with his second home run of the season to allow the Warriors to take a 4-3 run advantage.  Sawyer Price doubled down the right field line and then came in to score as Conner Ewing singled up the middle.  However, the Wolves scored three more in the bottom of the inning to lead 6-5.

Trailing 8-5 in the top of the sixth inning, the Warriors continued to put up a fight.  Quinton Bent led off with a double to deep center field and then advanced to third when Conner Ewing grounded out.  With Bent on third base, Nolan Steevens singled to bring in the sixth running of the evening for the Warriors.  Steevens advanced to second on a passed ball and then came home on a single to left field by Timo Schau.

Newberry put two more runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead 10-7 and win the game.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Bristol, TN as they take on the King Tornado on March 1 and 2.  The Warriors will remain on the road on March 5 as they travel to Truett-McConnell to take on the Bears at 3 p.m.
