Warriors Drop Doubleheader to Tornado

Bristol, TN – Southern Wesleyan fell in doubleheader action against the King Tornado on Saturday in 5-4 and 8-2 final score.

The Warriors posted four hits in the first game of the day.  Quinton Bent led the team with a double.  He went on to post two of the three RBIs for the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan posted six walks and Ty King Richards had a sacrifice bunt during the game.  Conner Ewing had a stolen base during the game.  Aaron Bennett started game one and recorded three of the five strikeouts.  Bryson Fowler came in to pitch in relief and posted two strikeouts over the two innings he pitched.

Southern Wesleyan recorded eight hits in game two with Conner Ewing leading the team with two hits.  Ewing posted a double as one of his hits.  Tanner Glass and Sean Sutay had the lone RBIs of the game.  Nolan Steevens had the lone walk of the day and Sutay recorded two sacrifice bunts.  Jarred Jones started game two and recorded one strikeout in the 1.1 innings he pitched.  Jackson Fischer, Josh Core and Dustin Parsons came in to pitch in relief for the Warriors.  Fischer led the team with four strikeouts over the 4.1 innings he pitched.

How It Happened

Game One

The King Tornado took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead over the Warriors.  They extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning.

Southern Wesleyan struck back in the top of the fifth inning.  Jarred Jones led off with a singled to left field and then advanced to second base as Tanner Glass walked.  With two on, Julio Justo reached on a fielder's choice.  One a throwing error on the play Jones came in to score.  With Glass at second and Justo on first, Quinton Bent doubled to left center to bring both Justo and Glass in and allow the Warriors to tie the game 3-3.  Ewing grounded out to third base, but the ground out allowed Bent to score and gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead over the Tornado.

However, the Tornado fought back in the bottom of the inning to win the game 5-4.

Game Two

The Tornado pushed ahead early in game two of the afternoon, taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Southern Wesleyan put a run on the board in the top of the fifth inning.  Quinton Bent led off with a single down the left field line and then advanced to second as Conner Ewing singled through the left side.  With two on and no one out, Devin Patrick hit into a fielder's choice that got Ewing out, but advanced Bent to third.  With one out, Sean Sutay put down a sacrifice bunt to bring Bent in and make the score 1-3.

The Tornado extended their lead to 8-1 before the Warriors were able to put another run across home plate in the top of the eighth.  Ty King Richards led off with a single to right field.  Jarred Jones was hit by a pitch to put two on and bring Tanner Glass up to bat.  Glass singled to left field to bring King Richards in.  However, it was not enough as the Tornado won the game 8-2.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Cleveland, GA to take on the Truett-McConnell Bears on March 5 at 3 p.m.  They will then return to Dr. C Keith Connor Field as they host the Newberry Wolves on March 6 at 6 p.m.
