Warriors Split Double Header Against Hawks

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan split the final two games of the series on Saturday.  Chowan won the first game of the day in a 4-2 final.  However, the Warriors took game two in a 13-4 final to win the series.

The Warriors recorded six hits in game one, with Bryson Fowler leading the team with two hits.  Jarred Jones doubled during the game.  Julio Justo and Sean Sutay had the lone RBIs for the Warriors.  Devin Patrick was the lone Warrior to walk in the game, being walked three times.  Ty King Richards and the lone sacrifice bunt and stolen base for the Warriors.  Jarred Jones started the first game of the afternoon, pitching four innings while striking out four batters.  Jackson Fischer and Daniel Singleton came in to pitch in relief.

Southern Wesleyan posted 16 hits in the second game of the day.  Tanner Glass and Conner Ewing led the Warriors with three hits apiece.  Glass and Ewing were followed by Bryson Fowler and Ty King Richards with two hits.  Julio Justo, Quinton Bent and Tanner Glass all had doubles during the game.  Julio Justo led the Warriors with four RBIs.  Justo was followed by Timo Schau with three RBIs.  Three Warriors walked in the game.  Ty King Richards had two sacrifice bunts and stolen base, and Justo had a sacrifice fly.  TJ McEvilly started the final game of the series, pitching 6.1 innings while striking out three while picking up his third win of the season.  Josh Core came in to pitch in relief.  Core went 2.2 innings while striking out two.

"Always good to win the series and I thought our pitchers did a really good job all weekend.  They have started to show consistency, a sign of their hard work each day.  We had some guys step up at the plate with Tanner Glass and Conner Ewing having multiple hits in the final game of the series.  TJ McEvilly and Josh Core gave some solid innings and we scored across the board."

 

How It Happened

Game One

Southern Wesleyan put the first runs of the day on the board.  Jarred Jones led off with a double to right field.  He came in to score off a single by Julio Justo through the left side.

The Warriors extended their lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Bryson Fowler led off with single up the middle and advanced to second as Devin Patrick took first on a walk.  Ty King Richards was hit by a pitch to load up the bases.  Fowler was out at home on a fielder's choice by Timo Schau to keep the bases loaded.  Sean Sutay was hit by a pitch to bring Patrick in and give Southern Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.

Chowan fought back with runs in the fourth, sixth and seven inning to take a 4-2 victory over Southern Wesleyan in game one of the afternoon.

Game Two

Chowan struck first as a double by Lanier brought Lee in and put the Hawks up 1-0.  However, Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the first inning.  Timo Schau led off, reaching first on an error by the second baseman.  Schau advanced to second as Sean Sutay was hit by a pitch.  With two on, Jarred Jones singled to right center, advancing to second on the throw and allowing Schau to score.  With Jones on second and Sutay on third, Julio Justo hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Sutay home.  Quinton Bent followed with a double to left center to bring Jones home.  With Bent on second, Tanner Glass doubled down the left field line to score Bent and give the Warriors a 4-1 run advantage.

The Hawks put runs on the board in the top of the third and fourth inning to cut the Warriors lead down to 4-3.  Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead.  Tanner Glass singled up the middle and then advanced to third on back-to-back passed balls.  A single down the right field line by Conner Ewing brought Glass in to score.  Bryson Fowler followed with a single to move Ewing to second, and then a sacrifice bunt by Ty King Richards allowed both Fowler and Ewing to move up a base.  With both runners in scoring position, Timo Schau grounded out to allow Ewing to come in to put the Warriors up 6-3.

Southern Wesleyan extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth.  Bryson Fowler led off with a single to center field and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ty King Richards.  With Fowler on second base, Timo Schau singled to second base to move Fowler to third.  Sean Sutay was hit by a pitch to load up the bases.  Julio Justo hit a bases clearing double down the left field line to bring Sutay, Scahu and Fowler in and put the Warriors up 9-3.

The Warriors struck on the base pads again in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Tanner Glass was hit by a pitch to lead off and advanced to second as Conner Ewing singled to left field.  With two on, Ty King Richards reached on a fielder's choice that got Ewing out and advanced Glass to third base.  King Richards stole second base to put both runners within scoring position.  An error by second base allowed Schau to reach first and brought Glass in.  Sean Sutay followed with a single to bring King Richards in and put the Warriors ahead 11-3.

Southern Wesleyan extended their lead to 13-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Tyler Fuller led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Conner Ewing.  With two on Sawyer Price singled to right field to load the bases and bring  Ty King Richards up to bat.  King Richards singled up the middle to bring Fuller in.  With the bases loaded, Timo Schau walked to allow Ewing to score.  Chowan put one more run on the board in the top of the ninth inning, but fell in a 13-4 final score to the Warriors.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home as they host the Anderson Trojans on March 19.  They will then hit the road on March 20 as they travel to take on the Mars Hill Lions at 3 p.m.  The Warriors will remain on the road on March 22-23 as they travel to Belmont, NC to take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders.
