Coach Gillespie says...

"I am really proud of the way our guys stayed focused and took advantage of the opportunity to win game one of the series.  Aaron Bennett settled in and pitched well, and Josh Antwine did a great job in relief.  We had some key hits, none bigger than Timo Schau's sacrifice fly in the ninth.  Focus must remain on high tomorrow as we finish the series."

How It Happened

The University of Mount Olive struck first to take a 2-0 lead over Southern Wesleyan in the top of the first inning.  Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the first inning.  Timo Schau led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second as Sean Sutay grounded out on a sacrifice bunt.  A ground out by Jarred Jones allowed Schau to advance to third base.  With the runner ninety feet from home, a passed ball allowed Schau to come in and score and put the Warriors down 2-1.

The Trojans extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 run advantage.  They continued to challenge the Warriors pitching as they plated one more run in the top of the sixth inning.

The Warriors challenged in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Quinton Bent reached first on an error by the third baseman.  Bent advanced to second as Tyler Fuller singled to right field.  With two on, Conner Ewing singled up the middle to bring Bent in and put the Warriors down 5-2.  A passed ball allowed both Fuller and Ewing to advance a base.  Devin Patrick singled to center field to bring Fuller in, but then a bad throw allowed Patrick and Ewing to both advance a base. Back-to-back passed balls allowed both Ewing and Patrick to score to tie the game 5-5.

Southern Wesleyan continued to attack as Josh Antwine shut down the Trojans in the top of the ninth.  The Warriors started strong in the bottom of the inning.  Devin Patrick led off with a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch.  A sacrifice bunt by DJ Ludwick allowed Patrick to reach third base.  With one out and a runner within ninety feet of home, Timo Schau hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Patrick to score and allow the Warriors to win the game 6-5.
