Southern Wesleyan Falls To Erskine

Due West, SC – The Erskine Flying Fleet defeated the Southern Wesleyan Warriors in a 79-61 final score on Tuesday night.

The Warriors shot 42% from the field and were 73.9% at the free throw line in the loss.  Javon Hunter led the team with 14 points.  He was followed by Jeremy Wert with 12 and Justice McCullough with 11.  Hunter and Kylie Blackett led the team with three assists each.

Southern Wesleyan had 36 rebounds with Justice McCullough leading the team with 15 to give him a double-double in the loss.  Kylie Blackett and McCullough each had two steals in the game, and Jeremy Wert had the lone block for the Warriors.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan put points on the board first on free throws by Justice McCullough, but Erskine countered with a three point shot by Fineto Lungwana to take a 3-2 lead.  A layup by Zalan Richards allowed the Warriors to take a 4-3 lead.  Several free throws allowed the Warriors to take an 8-6 lead, but a three point shot by Zezmon Steeple put the Flying Fleet up 9-8.  A jump shot by Javon Hunter allowed Southern Wesleyan to tie the game 13-13, but the Fleet took the lead on a layup by Justin Shelton to make the score 17-15.  Shots by Gavin Sears and Jeremy Wert allowed the Warriors to tie the game 21-21.  A layup by Hunter allowed the Warriors to take a 26-23 point lead.  The Flying Fleet pushed ahead to take a 30-26 lead, but a jumper by Jalen Lowery put the Warriors down two.  Erskine took a 38-29 point lead on a three point shot by Thomas Nolan.  Justice McCullough made a jump shot off a pass by Hunter to keep Southern Wesleyan within ten and make the score 31-41.  At the half, the Flying Fleet were leading 45-34.

Southern Wesleyan jumped out in the second half with a layup by Jeremy Wert to come to 36-45 behind Erskine.  A layup by Justice McCullough put the Warriors down nine to the Flying Fleet.  Southern Wesleyan continued to battle with layups by Kylie Blackett and Jeremy Wert to come to 44-49 behind the Fleet.  A dunk by Caleb Shackleford allowed the Flying Fleet to take a 53-49 point advantage.  Southern Wesleyan countered Erskine's baskets, but a three point shot by Jordan Watson pushed the Flying Fleet ahead 52-58.  A three point shot by Kylie Blackett allowed the Warriors to come within five and made the score 62-57.  However, Erskine pushed ahead to an 11 point lead on a jumper by Austin Venable.  The Flying Fleet won the game in a 77-61 final score.
