Warriors Drop Non-Conference Game To Lions

Mars Hill, NC - Southern Wesleyan fell to the Mars Hill Lions in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening in a 77-70 final.

Southern Wesleyan shot 41.4% from the field in the loss on Wednesday evening. Javon Hunter and Jalen Lowery led the team with 17 points apiece. They were followed by Diego Poore with 12 points. The Warriors recorded 30 rebounds in the loss. Zalan Richards led the team with eight rebounds and was followed by Poore with six. Hunter led the team with five of the Warriors 14 assists. Five Warriors posted steals.

How It Happened

Jacob Smith put the Warriors on the board first in the contest with a 3-pointer. The Warriors were able to extend their lead after a layup from Jalen Lowery. Both teams traded baskets back and forth before the Warriors could gain a 21-16 lead after a 3-pointer from Lowery and a layup from Isaac Ford. The Lions tied it back up but the Warriors countered to lead 32-31 after a 3-pointer from Diego Poore. The Lions were able to make a late run to lead 36-32 at the half.

Lowery made a layup to start the second half. The Lions were able to gain momentum after a layup from Nassyr Daniel, but the Warriors were able to cut the lead to five and trailed only 49-54. Southern Wesleyan continued to chip away at the Lions lead, but the Lions fought to stretch their lead. A late 3-pointer from Javon Hunter gave the Warriors momentum late in the game as they pushed on. Despite late shots from Poore and Jacob Smith, the Lions went on to win the game 77-70.

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to King University on February 2 to take on the Tornado at 4 p.m. They will then travel to Barton College to take on the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. on February 9.
