Men's Tennis Wins Home Opener

Central, SC - Southern Wesleyan opened up their first home match of the season with a 4-3 win over the Brevard Tornados.

Coach Thompson Says...

"I am proud of the way we bounced back as a team! We competed and fought hard in every match! Peter Kovats did a great job of winning 11 games in a row after being down 5-2 in the first set in his singles match. He really set the tone and changed the momentum of the match in our favor."

How It Happened

The Warriors went 1-1 in doubles action on Saturday. The team of Peter Kovats and Nathan Holley played a great match to defeat the Tornados team of Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst 6-2. The team of Joseph Olatunji and Ben Smith challenged, but fell short to the team of David Bumgarner and Tyler Frazee in a 6-4 final.

In singles play, the Warriors went 4-1 against the Tornados. Peter Kovats defeated Tim Hengst in a 7-5 and 6-0 final. Joseph Olatunji defeated Tyler Frazee 6-1 and 6-2. Freshman Nathan Holley defeated David Bumgarner 6-3 and 6-0 and Ben Smith defeated Nathan Boepple 6-2 and 6-0. Sarvesh Maria challenged, but fell short to Tom Mittring 6-4 and 6-4.

What's Next

The Warriors will host the Lander Bearcats on February 5 at 3 p.m. and then they will travel to Lenoir-Rhyne to take on the Bears on February 8 at 2 p.m.
