Warriors Split Double Header Versus Point

Central, S.C. - The Southern Wesleyan Warriors took the field Wednesday afternoon to play the Point University Skyhawks in a doubleheader on Wednesday night. The Warriors split with the Skyhawks, winning the first game 9-10 and falling short in their second game with a final score of 5-3.

 

In game one, the Warriors put up 15 hits, 10 RBI's, and 10 runs.  Sara Sweatt led the Warriors in hits and runs with four each.  Alex Oliver and Lizzie Fela were right behind Sweatt in hits for the game with three apiece, followed by Amber Belk with two.  Oliver led the team in RBIs with five.  She was followed behind by Fela with three RBI's.  Belk led the team in stolen bases in the game with two.  Sweatt and Oliver each had a stolen base in the game.  Starting pitcher, Natalie Johnson went 2.2 innings before Lucy Wolff came in to pitch 3.1 innings to get the win for the Warriors.

 

In game two, the Warriors were led by Sara Sweatt in hits with three in the game.  She is followed by Lizzie Fela and Alex Oliver with two apiece.  Oliver once again led the team in RBI's with two for the second game with Amber Belk behind her with one.  Sweatt was the only Warrior to steal a base in the second game.  Starting pitcher Josie Edwards had three strikeouts and allowed eight hits.

"It was nice to get the first win of the season under our belt.  We fought hard and came back to win late in the first game.  The team worked together and didn't quit.  Even though the outcome of game two wasn't quite the outcome we were hoping for, I'm still very proud of how we competed today."

 

How It Happened

Game One

Point was the first to put runs on the board in the first inning starting off with a 1-0 lead against the Warriors.  However, the Warriors were quick to retaliate.  Sara Sweatt opened up for the Warriors with a bunt to get on first, and then advanced to third base on a ground out bunt by Becca White.  Alex Oliver hit a sacrifice fly to bring Sweatt around home to score.

 

Amber Belk had two back-to-back stolen bases in the bottom of the 2nd inning, but unfortunately it led to nothing for the Warriors during that inning.  The Warriors gave up four runs in the top of the 3rd inning to give the Skyhawks a 5-1 lead. The Warriors struck back in the bottom of the 3rd with a single from Sara SweattBecca White singled, followed by a single by Alex Oliver to bring Sweatt around home to score.  Lizzie Fela followed up with a double to bring both White and Oliver home to bring the score to 5-4.  Southern Weslleyan was not done, as Hunter Hoskins hit her first double of the season bringing Fela home to tie the game 5-5 to end the inning.

 

The Skyhawks regained the lead in the top of the 4th putting themselves at a 6-5 advantage on a fielder's choice by Micah Simmons to bring Brooke Williams across the plate to score.  However, the Warriors were quick to come back and tie the game in the bottom of the 4th with a single by Alex Oliver to bring Sweatt around to score and tie the game 6-6.

 

The Skyhawks scored in the top of the 5th on a double and ended the top with a 7-6 lead over Southern Wesleyan.  Lizzie Fela started the bottom of the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a ground out by Hunter Hoskins.  Amber Belk had her first RBI of the night with a single that brought Fela home and tied the game at 7-7.

 

Southern Wesleyan pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Kali Berrigan walked and was advanced to second on a single by Sara SweattAlex Oliver singled to bring Sweatt and Berrigan around to score with two outs on the board.  Lizzie Fela followed with a single to bring Oliver across the plate, putting the Warriors up 10-9 to take their first win of the season.

 

Game Two

Point was once again first to strike in game two of the two game series.  Amber Anderson doubled, followed by a single by Tomi Kate O'Neal to advance Anderson to third.  A double by Shea Pendley allowed the Skyhawks to score two runs and then the third double of the inning allowed them to take a 3-0 lead in the 1st inning.  The Warriors struck back in the bottom of the 1st with a triple by Sara Sweatt to lead off.  Alex Oliver singled to bring Sweatt home to score.  Lizzie Fela and Shelby Stroud had back-to-back singles to advance Oliver to third.  Amber Belk reached on a fielder's choice to bring Oliver around to score and make the score 3-2.

 

The Skyhawks gave themselves a comfortable lead in the 2nd when they scored on a single by Micah Simmons to give them a 4-2 lead.  The game was kept scoreless until the top of the 6th when Skyhawks' Amber Anderson had a sacrifice fly-out to left field to drive in Allie Beilstein.  The Warriors countered in the bottom of the 7th when Sara Sweatt got on base by a bunted single.  Alex Oliver singled to advance Sweatt to third and then went on to score on the throw to bring the score to 5-3 to end the game.

 

What's Next

The Warriors will be home again Friday, February 10 at 2 and 4 when they play Young Harris at Varsity Field.
