Warriors Split Double Header Versus Canes

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan splits to the GA Southwestern Canes on Saturday evening.  The Warriors fell in game one 2-1, but came back to win the second game 8-4.

Southern Wesleyan posted seven hits in the game one loss.  Lexi Thompson led the team with two hits in the game including a double.  Becca White scored the lone run and Maddie Ward posted the lone RBI.  Three Warriors walked during the game.  Hunter Hoskins pitched a complete game for the Warriors, striking out two while allowing nine hits.

The Warriors charged ahead in game two and posted thirteen hits.  Becca White led the team with three hits in the game two victory.  Makaila Irby hit two doubles during the game.  Natalie Johnson scored two runs during the game, while White and Irby each had two RBIs.  Two Warriors walked and Lexi Thompson had a sacrifice bunt.  Southern Wesleyan posted seven stolen bases with Johnson leading the team with three.  Josie Edwards started game two and pitched 3.2 innings while striking out three batters.  Hunter Hoskins came in to pitch in relief and picked up her fourth win of the season after going 3.1 innings.

How It Happened

Game One

In the bottom of the first inning, the Warriors were the first to put a run on the board.  Becca White led off with a single and then advanced to second when Kassidy Hamrick singled to shortstop.  Megan New followed with single up the middle to load up the bases.  Maddie Ward then walked to bring White home to put the Warriors up 1-0.

In the top of the third, the Canes countered to tie the game.  GA Southwestern went on to take a 2-1 lead to win game one.

 

Game Two

Georgia Southwestern took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  However, Southern Wesleyan countered in the bottom of the second inning.  Riley Herdliska led off with a walk and then advanced to second base on a passed ball.  Josie Edwards hit a single to the pitcher to advance Herdliska to within ninety feet from home plate.  With Natalie Johnson up to bat, Edwards and Herdliska each stole a base to put the Warriors down 2-1.  Johnson followed up with a single to right field to bring Edwards in to tie the game.  With Addie Nugent up to bat, Johnson stole second and third base.  Nugent singled to the pitcher to bring Johnson in to put the Warriors up 3-2.  Becca White grounded out to shortstop to advance Nugent to second.  A single by Lexi Thompson brought Nugent home.  With a runner at first, Makaila Irby doubled to left field to bring Thompson home and give the Warriors a 5-2 lead.

Southern Wesleyan lengthened their lead in the bottom of the third inning.  Grace McGuffin hit a bunt single to lead off the third.  Natalie Johnson hit a single to center field to put McGuffin on second.  McGuffin and Johnson both stole a base to put both runners in scoring position.  Becca White singled to center field to bring both Johnson and McGuffin in to score to put the Warriors up 7-2.

Georgia Southwestern countered in the top of the fourth to score two, but in the bottom of the sixth Southern Wesleyan responded to increase their lead.  Becca White led off the inning with a single to third base.  A sacrifice bunt by Lexi Thompson advanced White to second base.  Makaila Irby hit her second double of the game to bring White in to give the Warriors an 8-4 victory.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Newberry to take on the Wolves on March 9.  They will then return to Varsity Field on March 10 as they take on the Catawba Indians at 1 and 3 p.m.
