Warriors Split Doubleheader Versus Patriots

Central, SC - Southern Wesleyan split the doubleheader with the Francis Marion Patriots on Friday evening, falling in the first game 5-1 and winning the second game 6-5.

Southern Wesleyan had five hits in game one. Delaney Byers and Megan New led the team with two hits apiece. Kali Berrigan contributed the other hit for the Warriors. Lydia Clanton had the lone RBI in game one. Byers had her first triple of the season and three Warriors posted stolen bases in the loss. Southern Wesleyan posted eight strikeouts, five coming from starting pitcher Ashton Martin. Martin went four innings and allowed two hits. Emma Collins pitched in relief for the Warriors.

The Warriors had nine hits in the second game win. Amber Belk and Megan New led the team with two hits apiece. Belk had three RBIs. New, Grace McGuffin, and Lexi Thompson each had one RBI. Delaney Byers, Lexi Thompson, and Amber Belk each posted a double in game two. Six Warriors had stolen bases. Southern Wesleyan posted two strikouts. Delanie Laudenbacher was the winning pitcher and pitched all seven innings for the Warriors.

How It Happened

Game One

The Patriots struck first in the top of the second inning to lead 1-0 early in the contest. Delaney Byers started off the bottom of the third inning with a lead-off triple. Lydia Clanton flied out to centerfield, but was able to pick up an RBI and score Byers. This tied the game at 1-1.The Patriots came out big in the sixth inning and added two runs while holding the Warriors. Francis Marion added two more runs in the top of the seventh to go on and win game one 5-1.

Game Two

Francis Marion posted the first runs of game two in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead over Southern Wesleyan. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Megan New led off with a single up the middle. Kassidy Hamrick came in to run for New and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kali Berrigan. Hamrick stole third and was driven in by Lexi Thompson off of a double. Thompson picked up an RBI and the Warriors trailed 3-1. In the top of the fifth inning, the Patriots added on two runs. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Warriors continued to fight. Kali Berrigan reached on an error and advanced to second after Thompson drew a walk. Amber Belk singled and advanced to second while Thompson advanced to third and Berrigan scored. Grace McGuffin singled to scored Thompson and the Warriors went into the seventh inning trailing only 5-3. Pitcher Delanie Laudenbacher and her defense held the Patriots in the top of the seventh. Delaney Byers led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double up the middle. Lydia Clanton singled to advance Byers to third. New singled to score Byers. Becca White pitch ran for New and stole second. Berrigan singled and was followed by a groundout, but advanced the runners. Belk doubled through the left side to score Berrigan and White and go on to win game two 6-5.

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan hosts Columbia International on February 9 at 1 and 3 p.m. They will then travel to play in the North Georgia Tournament on February 15 and 16.
