Central, SC - Southern Wesleyan defeated the Columbia International Rams on Saturday afternoon in 14-1 and 10-1 final scores.

Southern Wesleyan had 13 hits in game one. Lydia Clanton led the team with three hits in the win. Seven other Warriors had hits. The Warriors had 13 RBIs. Ashton Martin led the Warriors with four. Lydia Clanton had a triple for the Warriors and Ashton Martin had a home run. Six players had stolen bases. Southern Wesleyan posted four strikeouts, all coming from starting pitcher Ashton Martin. Martin pitched all five innings.

The Warriors posted ten hits in the second game. Lydia Clanton led the team with three hits in the win. Six other Warriors had hits. The Warriors had 10 RBIs. Clanton led the Warriors with four. Clanton and Kali Berrigan each had a double in the game. Clanton and Emma Collins had the stolen bases for the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan posted five strikeouts in game two, all coming from starting pitcher Delanie Laudenbacher. Laudenbacher pitched all five innings.

"Our team is starting to grow and become a unit of one. Today I think we just carried the mindset that we finished with last night and stayed there during both games. I'm just proud of how hard we are playing. In sports, you know that you'll always have some physical mistakes. But champions overcome those with what I call a killer instinct. I saw our team take a positive step in that direction the past few days."

How It Happened

Game One

The Warriors jumped out early in the bottom of the first inning. Lydia Clanton singled through the left side to score lead-off batter Emma Collins. Then Kali Berrigan singled to advance Megan New to second and score Clanton. Amber Belk drew a walk that advanced Lexi Thompson to second, advanced Berrigan to third, and scored New. Ashton Martin, batting cleanup, homered to score Belk, Thompson, and Berrigan and picked up four RBIs to lead 7-0. In the bottom of the second inning, Clanton tripled through the left side to score Delaney Byers. New singled to score Clanton and pick up an RBI of her own. Amber Belk advanced to second on a bad throw from the Rams and Berrigan was able to score and lead 10-0. The Rams picked up one run in the top of the third inning, but the Warriors didn't back down. Byers grounded out but scored Kassidy Hamrick in the bottom of the third. Clanton then singled through the left side to score Collins and lead 12-1. In the bottom of the fourth, the Warriors put an exclamation point on the game after scoring two more runs. Micah Williams scored on a groundout from Byers and Collins scored on a walk from Makaila Irby.

Game Two

Southern Wesleyan scored early in the second game with a single from Lydia Clanton to score Emma Collins. The Rams countered in the top of the third and tied the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the third inning, Lexi Thompson singled to advance Megan New to third and score Clanton. Riley Herdliska grounded out to the shortstop, but advanced Amber Belk to second, advanced Thompson to third, and scored New. Collins walked to pick up an RBI while scoring Thompson, advancing Grace McGuffin to second and Belk to third. Then Delaney Byers singled to score Belk and advance Collins to second and McGuffin to third. Clanton doubled to the left side to pick up 3 RBI and score Byers, Collins, and McGuffin. The Warriors led 8-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Makaila Irby grounded out to third base and gained an RBI by scoring Josie Edwards and advancing Belk to second. Becca White rounded up the fourth inning with a single that scored Belk to earn an RBI of her own.

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to play in the North Georgia Tournament on February 15 and 16. They will face North Georgia at 12 p.m. and McKendree at 2 p.m. on February 15. They will then play Alabama Huntsville at 10 a.m. and North Georgia at 12 p.m. on February 16. The Warriors will return home to play the Anderson Trojans on February 19 at 6 p.m.
