Albany, GA - Southern Wesleyan defeated the Albany State Rams on Friday evening in 2-1 and 11-5 final scores.
Southern Wesleyan had six hits in game one. Delaney Byers, Lydia Clanton, Ashton Martin, Kali Berrigan, Taylor Le, and Grace McGuffin all posted one hit each. Clanton and Berrigan each had one RBI. Emma Collins drew two walks. Byers had a double for the Warriors and Clanton had one homerun. Collins had the lone stolen base for the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan posted four strikeouts, all coming from starting pitcher Ashton Martin. Martin pitched all seven innings.
The Warriors posted twelve hits in the second game. Emma Collins, Lydia Clanton, and Megan New each posted two hits to lead the team, while six other Warriors contributed one hit apiece. The Warriors had 10 RBIs. Berrigan, New, and Le each had two RBIs. Collins, Berrigan, New, Le, and Amber Belk each had a double against the Rams in game two. Collins had two stolen bases and Barrigan had one. Southern Wesleyan posted eight strikeouts in game two, five coming from starting pitcher, Delanie Laudenbacher and three coming from relief pitcher, Emma Collins.

"First, it was great to be back on the field competing after not being able for 13 days due to weather. I think anytime that you get a sweep on the road requires a lot of perseverence. Today was no different. We got a tremendous pitched game from Ashton in game one and then game two had some inclement weather and there was a long delay. I really like how we fought and just really battled. We will continue to address areas of mistakes as a coaching staff and get ready for our next competition."
How It Happened
The Warriors struck early in game one. Delaney Byers kicked off the first inning with a double. Ashton Martin then drew a walk to take first base. Kali Berrigan doubled to score Byers and advance Martin to third. The Warriors led 1-0.
Albany State countered in the bottom of the second to pick up one run to tie the game at 1-1.
Lydia Clanton homered in the top of the third to lead-off the inning and increased the Warriors lead to 2-1.
Strong pitching from Ashton Martin was able to hold the Rams and allow the Warriors to win game one 2-1. Martin posted four strikeouts in the win.
Southern Wesleyan came out firing in game two, with a double from Emma Collins to lead-off the first inning. Collins stole third and Delaney Byers singled to score her and gain an RBI. Lydia Clanton then singled to advance Byers to second base. Ashton Martin grounded out to third base, but was able to advance both runners. Byers was picked off on the run to third, but Kali Berrigan reached first on a third strike drop ball to score Clanton. Megan New kept the bats hot with a double to score Berrigan and the Warriors led 3-0 in the first inning.
The Rams responded with three runs of their own to tie the game 3-3 going into the top of the third inning.
After a long rain delay, the Warriors came out strong in the top of the third inning. Byers led-off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single from Clanton. Martin also walked and advanced both runners. Grace McGuffin came in to run for Martin. Berrigan then doubled to score Byers and Clanton and move McGuffin to third. New grounded out to the shortstop, but Berrigan advanced to third on the throw and McGuffin scored. Amber Belk then came in and doubled to score Berrigan and gave the Warriors the 7-3 lead.
Albany State tacked on another run in the bottom of the third to trail 7-4.
Berrigan led-off the top of the seventh inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a single from New. Kassidy Hamrick then singled for the Warriors to advance both runners. Josie Edwards reached on a fielder's choice which allowed all other runners to advance. Berrigan was thrown out at home, but the Warriors were still in a good position with the bases loaded. Amber Belk came in to run for Edwards. Taylor Le then doubled to score Hamrick and New and gain two RBIs. Byers and Clanton both reached base after getting hit by pitches. This scored Belk and advanced the other runners. Addie Nugent came in to bat and was also hit by a pitch, which alowed Le to score. The Warriors lead 11-4.
Southern Wesleyan will travel right down the road to play the Anderson Trojans on March 6 at 3 and 5 p.m. They will then return home to open up Conference Carolinas play on March 12. The Warriors will host the Emmanuel College Lions at 3 and 5 p.m.
