Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan split their Conference Carolinas home opener against the Emmanuel College Lions on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors won game one 4-1 and the Lions won game two 5-4.
Southern Wesleyan had four hits in the win over the Lions. Taylor Le led the team with two hits. Delaney Byers and Megan New each had one hit. Byers grand slam gave her 4 RBIs to lead the team and post her first home run of the season. Lydia Clanton drew two walks. Southern Wesleyan posted 10 strikeouts, all coming from starting pitcher, Ashton Martin. Martin pitched all seven innings for the Warriors and allowed five hits.
The Warriors posted seven hits in the game two loss. Taylor Le, Delaney Byers, Lydia Clanton, Ashton Martin, Megan New, Kali Berrigan and Addie Nugent each posted one hit. Taylor Le led with two RBIs and was followed by Lydia Clanton with one. Clanton and Becca White each drew walks. Le and Berrigan each posted doubles in the contest and Clanton had the lone stolen base. Southern Wesleyan posted 2 strikeouts, one coming from starting pitcher, Emma Collins, and one from relief pitcher, Ashton Martin. Emma Collins pitched the first two innings, Delanie Laudenbacher pitched the middle three innings, and Ashton Martin came in relief to pitch the last two innings.

"First of all, I give a lot of credit to our opponent, Emmanuel. They are a well coached softball team. In game one, we got a great outing from Ashton Martin in the circle. The grand slam from Delaney Byers was the big blow to them, but several people did their job to allow that to happen: Lexi Thompson, Becca White and Taylor Le. It was great to come out and win our first conference game of the year. In game two, we were honestly just one play short. Emmanuel's center fielder made a game-ending diving catch where the tying run would have scored. Again, you just give them credit for making that play. We will get two practices in before we hit the road for four conference games and just continue to work on fundamentals and a competitive mentality."
How It Happened
The Warriors struck first in the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lexi Thompson led off the inning after reaching on an error by the short shop. Addie Nugent came in to run for Thompson. Becca White then came in to reach first on an error by the third baseman and Nugent advanced to second. Taylor Le then singled to move both runners up a base. With the bases loaded, Delaney Byers came into hit a grand slam and give the Warriors a 4-0 lead over the Lions. Byers collected 4 RBIs.
The Lions added one run in the top of the seventh inning, but the Warriors held them and went on to win game one 4-0.
The Lions jumped out early in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead after 3 hits. They added one more run the top of the second inning to increase their lead to 3-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Taylor Le led off the inning by taking first base after getting hit by a pitch. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Delaney Byers grounded out to the third baseman but advanced Le to third base. Lydia Clanton singled to score Le. Clanton stole second. Megan New singled to left field to move Clanton to third. Clanton then advanced home on an error by the short shop to put the Warriors only trailing 2-3.
Addie Nugent led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Becca White grounded out to third, but Nugent was able to advance to second. Taylor Le then doubled to the left field corner to score Nugent and tie up the game 3-3.
Emmanuel added one more run in the top of the fifth inning to lead 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Kali Berrigan doubled to center field and then she advanced to third on a wild pitch. Becca White followed with a walk. Taylor Le grounded out, but advanced White to second and scored Berrigan. The Warriors tied it up 4-4.
The Lions added another run in the top of the seventh. They went on to win the game 5-4.
Southern Wesleyan will travel to Banner Elk, NC on March 15 to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 1 and 3 p.m. They will then travel to Bristol, TN on March 16 to take on the King Tornado at 2 and 4 p.m.
