Softball Picks Up Two Wins Against Converse

Central, SC - Southern Wesleyan swept the Converse Valkyries on Friday evening in 6-1 and 4-0 final scores. 


The Warriors had seven hits in the game one win over the Converse Valkyries. Delaney Byers and Lydia Clanton each had two hits, while Taylor Le, Ashton Martin and Emma Collins each had one hit. Byers and Martin led the team with two RBIs each. Five Warriors drew walks. Byers posted a double and a home run, while Martin had a home run as well to lead the team offensively. Collins and Berrigan each had a stolen base. Southern Wesleyan posted five strikeouts in the win, all coming from starting pitcher, Delanie Laudenbacher. She pitched all seven innings. 

In the game two victory, Southern Wesleyan collected seven hits as a team. Taylor Le led the team with two hits and was followed by Addie Nugent, Emma Collins, Megan New, Ashton Martin and Becca White with one each. Nugent had two RBIs and a double to lead the Warriors. Megan New also contributed a double. Collins had the lone stolen base for the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan posted nine strikeouts, all coming from starting pitcher, Ashton Martin. She pitched all seven innings.

Coach Adkins Says...

"I thought it was a great job today by our pitchers (Delanie and Ashton) and our catcher, Megan. They just really controlled the games. We got enough timely hits to get the wins, but I want us to do a better job making decisions at the plate. But again, I just really want to praise our pitchers and catcher."


How It Happened

Game One

The Valkyries struck first in the contest on Friday evening. 

In the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors countered with a home run from Ashton Martin, that also scored Kali Berrigan, who reached on a walk. Emma Collins then drew a walk and scored on a single from Taylor Le. Addie Nugent laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Le to second. Delaney Byers kept the bats going with a double to score Le and Lydia Clanton scored Byers on a single to put the Warriors ahead 5-1.

Delaney Byers homered in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase the Warriors lead to 6-1. They went on to win game one.

Game Two

The Warriors scored first in game two in the bottom of the third inning. Ashton Martin led-off with a single and Amber Belk came in to pinch run for her. Becca White singled to advance Belk to second and Taylor Le followed with another base hit to load the bases. Addie Nugent doubled to score Belk and White and give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Delaney Byers then hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Le. Emma Collins singled to score Nugent and put Southern Wesleyan on top 4-0.

Southern Wesleyan went on to win game two, 4-0.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will host the Trinity Baptist Eagles on April 6 at 1 and 3 p.m. The Senior Night ceremony will be after game two. They will then host the North Greenville Crusaders on April 13 at 1 and 3 p.m.
