Warriors Remain Undefeated After Day One in the Conference Tournament

Burlington, NC - Southern Wesleyan defeated the North Greenville Crusaders in a 6-3 final and also the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a 4-2 final to remain undefeated in the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Friday.

 

In game one of the Conference Carolinas tournament, Southern Wesleyan defeated the North Greenville Crusaders in a 6-3 final. The Warriors posted nine hits and were led by Addie Nugent with three. She was followed by Ashton Martin with two and Taylor Le, Lydia Clanton, Lexi Thompson and Kali Berrigan with one apiece. Six Warriors had RBIs and Clanton led the team with two walks, while Berrigan had one. Clanton posted her seventh homerun of the season. Nugent had three stolen bases and Emma Collins followed with one of her own. Southern Wesleyan posted two strikeouts, both coming from starting pitcher, Delanie Laudenbacher.

The Warriors had eight hits in the win over the Belmont Abbey Crusaders. Addie Nugent led the team with two hits and was followed by Taylor Le, Lydia Clanton, Ashton Martin, Megan New, Lexi Thompson and Grace McGuffin with one apiece. Four Warriors had RBIs and Thompson and Berrigan each drew walks. Nugent had the lone stolen base in the win. Southern Wesleyan posted one strikeout, coming from starting pitcher, Ashton Martin. Martin threw the complete game for the Warriors.

How It Happened

Game One vs. North Greenville

The Warriors jumped out early in the first inning with a single from Addie Nugent. Nugent stole second and took third on a throwing error by the Crusaders. Delaney Byers then had a sacrifice fly that allowed Nugent to tag up and score and put them ahead 1-0. The Crusaders countered with a solo homerun to tie it up 1-1 after the first inning. 

In the bottom of the second inning, the Crusaders added two more runs to lead 3-1.

Southern Wesleyan battled in the third inning to add another run. Nugent led-off with a single and followed with a stolen base to take second. Byers flew out to right field, but Nugent was able to advance to third. Lydia Clanton walked. Ashton Martin singled to left field to score Nugent and trail only 3-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, Kali Berrigan reached on a fielder's choice. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Grace McGuffin. Taylor Le singled and advanced to second on the throw to score Berrigan. Nugent followed Le with another single to score Le and take the 4-3 lead over North Greenville.

Lydia Clanton hit her seventh homerun on the season in the fifth inning to extend the Warriors lead to 5-3. Lexi Thompson then walked and had Emma Collins come in to pinch run for her. Collins stole second and advanced to third on the throwing error. Berrigan singled to score Collins and extend the Warriors lead to 6-3.

Southern Wesleyan went on to win this game 6-3.

 

Game Two vs. Belmont Abbey

The Crusaders struck first in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead and added another run in the third inning to lead 2-0. 

Southern Wesleyan rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning to score four runs. Addie Nugent led-off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Delaney Byers reached on a fielder's choice and was followed by a single from Lydia Clanton that advanced both runners. Ashton Martin then had a sacrifice fly that allowed all runners to tag up and score Nugent. Megan New then reached on a fielder's choice which advanced Clanton and scored Byers. Lexi Thompson then singled to score Clanton. Becca White came in to pinch run for New and Kassidy Hamrick ran for Thompson. Kali Berrigan then walked and both runners advanced. Makaila Irby then reached on a fielder's choice which allowed White to score and put the Warriors ahead 4-2. 

The Warriors went on to win game two in a 4-2 final.
