Southern Wesleyan Shows Perseverance After Bouncing Back to Win Game Two

Burlington, NC - Southern Wesleyan split on day two of the Conference Carolinas Championship Tournament after bouncing back from a 3-1 loss to the Lees-McRae Bobcats, to defeat the King Tornado in a 3-2 final and advance to the championship game.

 

In game one against the Bobcats, the Warriors collected three hits. Ashton Martin, Megan New, and Grace McGuffin each had one. New had the lone RBI and Emma Collins had two stolen bases. Southern Wesleyan had three strikeouts in the loss, one coming from starting pitcher, Delanie Laudenbacher, and two coming from Ashton Martin, who pitched in relief. 

The Warriors boasted 12 hits in the win over the Tornado. Lexi Thompson and Kali Berrigan led with three hits apiece. Ashton Martin followed with two and Nugent, Byers, Clanton, and Herdliska came up with one each. Herdliska led the team with two RBIs and four Warriors drew walks. Southern Wesleyan posted eight strikeouts in the win. Seven came from starting pitcher, Ashton Martin, who went eight innings for the Warriors. Delanie Laudenbacher closed out the last two innings with one strikeout for the team.

How It Happened

Game One vs. Lees-McRae

The Bobcats pounced first in the contest, adding three runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 3-0. 

Southern Wesleyan countered in the top of the fifth inning. Ashton Martin led off with a single to left field and Emma Collins came in to pinch run for her. Collins then stole second and third. Megan New came up to bat and singled to scored Collins and put the Warriors on the board. 

Lees-McRae held the Warriors and went on to win the game 3-1. 

Game Two vs. King

King jumped out first in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. 

The Warriors countered in the top of the second with two runs. Lydia Clanton singled to lead-off the inning. Ashton Martin followed with a hit of her own to advance Clanton. Lexi Thompson then singled to advance both runners. Then Berrigan reached on a fielder's choice, as Clanton was thrown out at home. Riley Herdliska singled down the left field line to score Martin and Thompson and put the Warriors on top 2-1. 

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Warriors were three outs away from advancing when the Tornado tied the game to send the game into extra innings. 

The eighth and ninth innings were scoreless. The Warriors battled in the top of the tenth to regain the lead. Addie Nugent led with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a groundout from Delaney Byers. Martin drew a walk and both runners scored on a single from Lexi Thompson. Nugent's run put the team ahead 3-2 going into the bottom of the inning. 

Ashton Martin and Delanie Laudenbacher had solid outings in their second contest of the day. While delivering strong performances on the mound, the defense behind them were just as solid. Taylor Le came up big in the bottom of the tenth to throw out the tying run at home and help the Warriors go on to win and advance to the the championship game.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will play the Lees-McRae Bobcats on April 28 at 12 p.m. in the championship game. If necessary, game two will be played at 2 p.m.
