Warriors Win Home Opener in Women's Basketball

The senior dynamic duo of Kristen Smith and Tatiana Manuel combined for 26 points in the Warriors victory over Columbia International University to kick-off the Southern Wesleyan University Tip-Off Tournament.

Columbia International University struck first, putting four on the board, but the Warriors rose to tie the game 6-6 on a jump shot by Breanna Richardson and then pull ahead by a shot by Tatiyana Mahone.  After that, the Warriors hit a rhythm and pushed to a 16-10 lead on a three point shot by Kristen Smith.  The Warriors score forty-eight points in the first half of the game, while the Rams were only able to put 29 on the board.

The Warriors pushed on in the second half, starting it off with a jump shot by Tatiana Manuel to give them a 50-29 lead.  It only went up from there as the Warriors went on to score fifty more points in the second half of the game.  Southern Wesleyan defeated the Rams 100-48.

"It was good seeing everyone getting time on the floor tonight," said Head Women's Basketball Coach John Davis.  He continued, "We were well-balanced offensively throughout the game and I was more pleased with our defense in the second half of play.  Tomorrow is going to be a great test for us in really good and balanced Brenau team."

Kristen Smith led the Warriors offensively with 16 points. She also adds 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Tatiana Manuel added 10 points and led with 7 rebounds while Taylor Vinson and Noelle van Zadelhoff each contributed 9 points. Each of the members on the team put up numbers for the Warriors tonight.

The Warriors shot 46.1% from the field on the night. A big difference in the game was three-point shooting as Southern Wesleyan shot 47.6% while holding Columbia International to just 12.5%. The team's offensive production was spread evenly throughout the game as the Warriors scored 22, 26, 28, and 24 in the respective quarters.

This win puts the Warriors 1-0 on their season under the leadership of Coach John Davis.  The Rams fall 0-4 with the loss.  They will next take on the Brenau University Golden Tigers on November 12 at 5 p.m. in the second round of the Southern Wesleyan Tip-Off Tournament.
