Southern Wesleyan Falls in Close Game to Emmanuel

Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Emmanuel Lions in the first Conference Carolinas game of the season in a 71-69 final score.

The Warriors shot 32.9% in field goals and 64.3% at the free throw line.  Tatiyana Mahone led the team with 19 points.  Mahone was followed by Breanna Richardson with 14 points.  Southern Wesleyan posted 55 rebounds in the loss, with Noelle Van Zadelhoff leading the team with 15 rebounds.  Breanna Richardson led the team with four assists, and Noelle Van Zadelhoff led the team with two steals and three blocks.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan struck first on a two-point jump shot by Breana Richardson to give Southern Wesleyan a 2-0 lead over the Lions.  The Warriors lengthened their lead to 4-0 on a shot by Tatiyana Mahone before the Lions' Mikayla Trombley made a free throw to put Emmanuel on the board 4-1 behind Southern Wesleyan.  The Lions fought back to tie the game 7-7 on a layup by Trombley.  The Warriors regained the lead on a jump shot by Tiana Sherman and lengthened it to 11-7 on free throws by Aneysa Williams.  The Lions countered to take 15-12 point lead on a three point jump shot by Marina Moreno Bendal.

The Warriors started off the second quarter on a layup by Tatiyana Mahone to put the Warriors 17-14 behind the Lions.  A jump shot and free throws by Kasey Howard kept the Warriors to within three of Emmanuel College.  Emmanuel and Southern Wesleyan exchanged shots, but both defenses remained strong to keep the score close.  Shots by Denisha Hall and Breanna Richardson put Southern Wesleyan 28-24 behind Emmanuel.  At the half, the Lions led 34-27.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the second half with a layup by senior Noelle Van Zadelhoff to put the Warriors within five of the Lions.  However, shots by Taylor Delasbour and Jenesai Mohammed give the Lions a ten point lead and make the score 39-29.  Southern Wesleyan would not go quietly as a layup by Kasey Howard and free throws by Breanna Richardson put the Warriors down 39-33.  Shots by Tiana Sherman and Tatiyana Mahone allowed the Warriors to come within one and make the score 41-40.

Free throws by Aneysa Williams allowed the Warriors to stay in the game.  The Warriors pushed onward with a jump shot by Noelle Van Zadelhoff and three-point shot by Breana Richardson to break Emmanuel's lead to 56-54.  Williams made two free throws to allow Southern Wesleyan to take a 59-58 and then they lengthened the lead to 62-58 on a three point shot by Tatiyana Mahone.  Southern Wesleyan fought hard, but Emmanuel pulled ahead to win the game 71-69.

 

What's Next

The Warriors will next travel to Lees-McRae to take on the Bobcats on November 28 at 5:30 p.m.  They will remain away on December 2 as they take on the Coker Cobras at 2 p.m.
