Warriors Fall To Valkyries

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Converse College Valkyries in a 86-74 final score on Saturday afternoon.

Tatiyana Mahone led the Warriors in the loss, putting up 17 points while going 9-16 at the free throw line and 4-10 in the field.  She was followed by Noelle van Zadelhoff and Breanna Richardson with 14 points each.  Richardson went on to lead the team with five assists.  Kasey Howard led the team with three steals and Tiana Sherman boasted two steals in the loss.  Tatiyana Mahone recorded a double-double and led the team in rebounds with 11.

"Tough night offensively for us.  It just goes to show you that we must bring our best effort each time we step foot on the court in this conference.  Converse did a great job tonight of answering every run we brought at them and they hit the shots consistently.  I am proud of our team for having a strong week of play, but we must start maintaining our level of play as we continue to move forward and improving on both ends of the floor."


How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan jumped out first, taking an early 2-0 lead on a layup by Breanna Richardson.  The Valkyries countered to tie the game 2-2 on a layup by Abigail Lewis.  Converse stormed ahead, taking a 9-4 advantage over Southern Wesleyan.  The Warriors countered to cut the Valkyries lead in half with a layup and free throws by Tatiyana Mahone to make the score 16-8.

Converse attacked first in the second quarter on a three point jump shot by Briana Hill to give them a 26-14 lead.  The Warriors pushed on with a layup by Noelle van Zadelhoff to cut the Valkyries to 30-19.  Free throws by van Zadelhoff and Breanna Richardson allowed the Warriors to come to 10-points down to Converse.  A three point shot by Kasey Howard and layup by Denisha Hall put the Warriors down eight points and brought the score to 29-27.  At the half, Converse was ahead 42-33.

A layup by Noelle van Zadelhoff allowed the Warriors to kick off the second half down 42-35.  However, the Valkyries countered with back-to-back shots by Brianna James to give Converse a 47-35 advantage.  The Warriors stormed forward with shots by Breanna Richardson, Jessica Sparks and Kasey Howard to allow Southern Wesleyan to come to 44-53 behind Converse.  They continued to fight back with layups by Sparks and Tatiyana Mahone to put the Warriors down 55-52.

The Valkyries pushed ahead with shots by Paige Johnson and Brianna James, however a three point shot by Jessica Sparks kept the Warriors within five points of Converse.  Converse pressured on taking a 76-65 point lead.  A series of free throws allowed the Valkyries to lengthen their lead to 86-67.  Free throws by Breanna Richardson and a layup by Kasey Howard allowed the Warriors to come to 86-73 behind the Valkyries.  The Valkyries won in an 86-74 final.


What's Next

The Warriors will next travel to North Greenville to take on the Crusaders on January 10th at 5:30 p.m.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium to take on the Mont Olive Trojans on January 13th at 2 p.m.
