Southern Wesleyan Wins Fourth Conference Game Of The Season

Central, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan defeated the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday afternoon in a 75-72 final.

Three Warriors posted double digits in the victory.  Jessica Sparks led the team with 17 points.  Sparks was followed by Aneysa Williams and Tatiyana Mahone with 16 points apiece.  The Warriors went on to have three players post three assists and five with one steal each.  Southern Wesleyan put up 46 rebounds in the victory.  Jessica Sparks and Tatiyana Mahone led the team in rebounds.  Sparks posted nine and Mahone followed with eight.  Noelle van Zadelhoff posted three blocks in the victory over the Trojans.

How It Happened

The University of Mount Olive Trojans attacked first on a jump shot by Felicity Havens.  The Warriors countered on foul shots by Kasey Howard to put the Warriors down 3-2 to the Trojans.  They went on to take a 4-3 lead on foul shots by Aneysa Williams.  Southern Wesleyan pushed ahead taking an 8-3 lead on layups by Aneysa Williams and Tatiyana Mahone.  Mount Olive countered with layups of their own to come to 8-10 behind the Warriors, but a layup by Williams allowed the Warriors to take a 12-8 point advantage.  With two minutes of play remaining, a layup by Felicity Havens allowed the Trojans to tie the game 12-12.  A three point jump shot by Aneysa Williams allowed Southern Wesleyan to regain a 15-14 lead.

Tatiyana Mahone led off the second quarter with a layup to give the Warriors a 21-18 point lead.  Mount Olive countered with layups by Kennedi Jones to put the Trojans up 22-21.  A layup by Tatiyana Mahone and a three point shot by Aneysa Williams allowed the Warriors to regain control and take a 26-22 point advantage.  Back-to-back three point shots by Williams and Jessica Sparks allowed Southern Wesleyan to take their lead to 32-26.  Southern Wesleyan ended the first half on a three point shot by Tatiyana Mahone to give them a 41-35 point lead.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the third quarter with a free throw by Noelle van Zadelhoff to give the Warriors a 42-35 lead.  However, Mount Olive countered with a three point shot by Felecity Havens to put the Trojans down 38-42 to the Warriors.  Shots by Ni'Ya Styles allowed the Trojans to come to just two points behind Southern Wesleyan.  However, a layup by Noelle van Zadelhoff allowed Southern Wesleyan to push their lead to 47-43.  Back-to-back shots by Jessica Sparks and Tiana Sherman allowed the Warriors to take a 51-43 point lead over the Trojans.  Mount Olive fought back, coming to one point behind Southern Wesleyan on a jump shot by Jada Bacchus.  However, a three point shot by Jessica Sparks at the third quarter buzzer allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 62-60 point lead.

The Warriors pushed on with a layup by Tatiyana Mahone to kick-off the final quarter of play.  Layups by Mahone and Noelle van Zadelhoff allowed Southern Wesleyan to lengthen their lead to 69-62.  Mount Olive would not go down quietly, scoring back to back shots to put them down 67-69 to Southern Wesleyan with five minutes of play remaining.  The Trojans took a 71-69 point lead on free throws and a layup by Felecity Havens.  With less than a minute of play, Tatiyana Mahone made a layup to give the Warriors a 72-71 point lead.  The Warriors pushed their lead to 75-72 on free throws by Aneysa Williams and Jessica Sparks to win the game.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain at home on Monday, January 15th as they take on the Barton Bulldogs at 5:30 p.m.  They will then take on the Belmont Abbey Crusaders on January 20th at 2 p.m.
