Southern Wesleyan Falls To King

Bristol, TN – Southern Wesleyan fell to the King Tornado in an 89-54 final score on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors shot 32.4% from the field in the loss to the Tornado.  Tatiyana Mahone led the team with 13 points and was followed by Breanna Richardson with 12 points.  Mahone went on to lead the team with two assists.

Southern Wesleyan had 40 rebounds in the loss.  Tatiyana Mahone and Noelle van Zadelhoff led the team with nine rebounds apiece.  Mahone led the team with two steals and the lone block of the afternoon for Southern Wesleyan.

How It Happened

The King Tornado took the lead after just over two minutes of play on a jump shot by Allison Littleton, but a jump shot by Breanna Richardson allowed the Warriors to tie the game 2-2 just seconds later.  Free throws for the Tornado allowed King to regain the lead.  A jump shot by Aneysa Wiliams allowed the Warriors to tie it up, but seconds later King's Kori West put up a jump shot for the Tornado to take a 6-4 lead.  A second jump shot by Richardson kept the Warriors within two points of the Tornado.  The Tornado took a 20-10 point lead on a three point shot by Che' Davis.  The Warriors continue to put the pressure on the Tornado on a jump shot by Aneysa Williams to come to 12-20 behind King.

The Tornado jumped out early on a three point shot by Kristen Cupples, but a jump shot by Shawndre' Young allowed the Warriors to come to 14-23 behind King.  Breanna Richardson took a pass from Noelle van Zadelhoff and sunk a three point shot to put the Warriors to within ten points of the Tornado.  Southern Wesleyan continued to battle with a jump shot by Jessica Sparks to put the Warriors down 19-27.  Back-to-back shots by Noelle van Zadelhoff and Breanna Richardson put the Warriors to within four points of the Tornado and make the score 27-23.  King pushed ahead to score several three point and jump shots to take a 40-27 point lead at the half.

King jumped out with a jump shot to kick off the third quarter, but Southern Wesleyan countered on a jump shots by Tatiyana Mahone to come to 31-45 behind the Tornado.  Jessica Sparks sunk a jump shot to make the score 33-45, and then a jump shot by Mahone put the Warriors within ten points to bring the score to 37-47.  A jump shot by Aneysa Williams put the Warriors down 42-53 with just over two minutes to play.

The Warriors kicked off the final quarter of play with a free throw by Shawndre' Young.  The Tornado pushed their lead to 70-43 on a three point shot by Arnelle Collins.  Breanna Richardson made a three point jump shot to put the Warriors down 46-74.  A three point shot by Tanayja Williams put the Warriors down 51-80 to the King Tornado.  Southern Wesleyan would fall to the King Tornado 89-54.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on February 17 as they take on the Emmanuel College Lions at 2 p.m.  They will then travel to Erskine on February 20 to take on the Flying Fleet at 5:30 p.m.
