Warriors Fall in Heartbreaker to Flying Fleet

Due West, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell the Erskine Flying Fleet in a 78-71 final score on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors shot 43.9% from the field and were 50% from the three point line.  Jessica Sparks led the team with 27 points.  Sparks was followed by Tatiyana Mahone with 12 and Noelle van Zadelhoff with 10.  Breanna Richardson led the team with eight assists.

Southern Wesleyan had 39 rebounds with Taityana Mahone posting 10 to give her a double-double in the loss.  Mahone was followed by Noelle van Zadelhoff with nine.  Mahone went on to lead the team with three steals and van Zadelhoff leading the team with two blocks.

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan scored first when Jessica Sparks made two free throws.  They pushed their lead to 6-0 on layups by Noelle van Zadelhoff and Tatiyana Mahone.  A jump shot by Breanna Richardson allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 10-0 lead over Erskine.  The Flying Fleet got on the board on a layup by Alexis Scott to make the score 10-2.  Southern Wesleyan pushed their lead to 18-5 on a jump shot and three point shot by Jessica Sparks.  The Flying Fleet came within ten points of the Warriors on a layup by Raina Hall.

Erskine struck first in the second quarter on a three point shot by Emani Bell to come to 15-20 behind the Warriors.  However, Breanna Richardson passed the ball to Tatiyana Mahone to allow Mahone to make a jump shot to give the Warriors a 22-15 point lead.  A jump shot by Megan Davis put the Flying Fleet down four points to the Warriors.  Erskine took the lead on a jump shot by Ollie Steadman to make the score 25-24.  However back-to-back shots by Aneysa Williams and Tatiyana Mahone allowed the Warriors to tie the game up 28-28.  A jump shot by Noelle van Zadelhoff put Southern Wesleyan up 30-28, but the Flying Fleet tied it back up on a jumper by Rickese Brooks.  Breanna Richardson put up a layup to make the score 32-30 at the half.

Southern Wesleyan scored first in the second half of the game on a layup by Jessica Sparks to put the Warriors up 34-30.  The Warriors continued to pressure with free throws by Aneysa Williams and a three point shot by Jessica Sparks to take the lead to 39-35.  A second three point shot put the Warriors up 42-39.  Erskine tied the game, but a three point shot by Jessica Sparks put the Warriors up 50-49.  Anyesa Williams put up a three point jump shot on a pass from Breanna Richardson to give the Warriors 53-49.

In the fourth quarter, Erskine tied the game and then took the lead on layups by Christian Brown and make the 53-55.  The Warriors put up their first points in the final quarter of play on a jump shot by Noelle van Zadelhoff to make the score 55-62.  A jump shot by Jessica Sparks put the Warriors within six of the Flying Fleet.  Sparks made a jump shot to put the Warriors down 69-73.  The Flying Fleet won the game 78-71.
