Warriors Fall in First Game of the Season

Augusta, GA – Southern Wesleyan fell in their opening game of the 2018-19 season to the UNC Pembroke Braves in a 56-44 final on Friday evening.

Southern Wesleyan scored 44 points in their first game of the year.  They posted a 29.6 field goal percentage and went 66.7% at the free throw line.  Tiana Sherman led the team with 14 points.  Sherman was followed by Iva Krstevska and Breanna Richardson each with nine points in the loss.  Sherman, Lisana Burnett and Krstevska each recorded five rebounds.  They went on to each post a block during the game.  Sherman went on to lead the team with four assists.  Burnett led the team with two of the three saves.

"Disappointing opening loss tonight.  We had many opportunities to win tonight, but we did not take them.  Tranistion defense and offensive rebounds were the separation in the fourth quarter.  There were positives to take and lean on heading into tomorrow."


How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan jumped out early in the first quarter on a layup by Lisana Burnett, however UNC Pembroke countered with a jump shot by Avery Locklear to tie the game 2-2.  The Warriors charged ahead on a jump shot by Tiana Sherman and a layup by Breanna Richardson to take a 6-2 point advantage over the Braves.  The Braves countered to take an 8-6 point lead on a layup by Avery Locklear.  A three point shot by Iva Krstevska allowed the Warriors to take a 15-14 point lead.

UNC Pembroke tied the game 16-16 in the second quarter on a layup by Deja McCain, but the Warriors countered with a layup by Lisana Burnett to put Southern Wesleyan on top 18-16.  The Braves continued to pressure the Warriors as Melanie Horne and Deja McCain made a layups to put them ahead of Southern Wesleyan 24-20.  A layup by Iva Krstevska and a three point shot by Tiana Sherman put the Warriors down 25-31 to the Braves at the half.

Tiana Sherman sunk a jump shot to kick off the third quarter and put Southern Wesleyan down 27-31.  Southern Wesleyan continued to challenge back as Sherman made back-to-back free throws to make the score 30-32.  However, a layup by Deja McCain allowed the Braves to take their lead to 37-31.  The Warriors countered on a jump shot and free throws by Breanna Richardson to make the score 35-37.

 The Warriors kicked off the fourth quarter with a three point shot by Breanna Richardson.  However the Braves countered with layups by Deja McCain and Tee Graham to take their lead to 44-39.  Southern Wesleyan would not go down quietly as Iva Krstevska made a three point shot to put them behind the Braves 42-46.  A jump shot by Denisha Hall put the Warriors within five, however the Braves countered with several shots to take a 54-44 point advantage.  UNC Pembroke won the game in a 56-44 final.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road as they take on the Augusta Jaguars in their final game at the PBC/Conference Carolinas Challenge at 4 p.m.  They will then travel to Charlotte, NC to take on the Queens Royals on November 14.
