Warriors Prevent Jaguars From Pouncing Ahead

Augusta, GA – Southern Wesleyan took down the Augusta Jaguars in a 78-68 final on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors shot a field goal percentage of 47.5% and shot 86.7% at the free throw line in their first victory of the 2018-19 season.  Iva Krstevska and Tanayja Williams led the team with 21 points each.  They were followed by Denisha Hall with 13 and Breanna Richardson with 10.  Krstevska led the team with seven of the 31 rebounds.  She was followed by Lisana Burnett with six rebounds.  Krstevska recorded five assists.  Hall and Burnett each recorded two of the five steals.

How It Happened

The Augusta Jaguars jumped out ahead with a three point shot by Cameryn Wilson and a layup by Brianna Middleton to take a 5-0 lead over the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan countered as Breanna Richardson sunk a three point jump shot to cut Augusta's lead to 3-5.  The Jaguars continued to push ahead, taking a 13-3 point advantage over the Warriors on a three point shot by Olivia Swanston.  Southern Wesleyan would not let that slow them down as Denisha Hall, Iva Krstevska and Lisana Burnett made back-to-back layups to cut Augusta's lead to 16-9.  The Warriors continued to pressure the Jaguars and a three point shot by Denisha Hall put the Warriors down 17-19 after the first quarter.

Southern Wesleyans attacks paid off as a layup by Breanna Richardson in the second quarter allowed the Warriors to tie the Jaguars 19-19.  Denisha Hall drew a foul and made both free throws to give the Warriors a 21-19 point advantage for the first time of the game.  Augusta drew ahead but Iva Krstevska made free throws to allow Southern Wesleyan to keep the game tied 23-23.  Layups by Breanna Richardson and Tanayja Williams put Southern Wesleyan on top 27-25.  The Warriors continued to challenge as Williams made a layup to take Southern Wesleyan's lead to 31-25.  A layup by Tiana Sherman allowed Southern Wesleyan to lead 33-29 at half.

Augusta would not go down quietly as they kicked off the third quarter with a shot by Olivia Swanston to tie the game 33-33.  A second three point shot by Swanston allowed the Jaguars to take a 36-33 point lead over the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan pressured right back as a three point shot by Tiana Sherman allowed the Warriors to tie the game up 38-38.  The Jaguars and Warriors battled back-and-forth, exchanging the lead several time, but a three point shot by Iva Krstevska allowed the Warriors to take a 43-42 point advantage.  Back-to-back three point shots by Tanayja Williams gave the Warriors a 51-50 point lead, but the Jaguars countered with a layup by Asia Harrison to regain the lead.

The Jaguars jumped out early in the final quarter with a layup by Brianna Middleton, but the Warriors countered with a jump shot by Iva Krstevska to put the Warriors down 53-54 to Augusta.  Southern Wesleyan pulled ahead on a jump shot by Tanayja Williams.  A jump shot by Iva Krstevska and a three point shot by Breanna Richardson put Southern Wesleyan on top 62-60.  The Warriors continued to charge ahead as a three point shot by Williams and a layup Krstevska allowed the Warriors to take a five point lead over the Jaguars.  Shots by Tiana Sherman and Lisana Burnett helped pushed Southern Wesleyan even further ahead and eventually win their first game of the season 78-67.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road on November 14 as they take on the Queens Royals at 6 p.m.  They will then travel to Spartanburg, SC to take part in the Converse Classic.  The Warriors will take on Piedmont International at 4 p.m. on November 16 and then Regents University at 1 p.m. on November 17.
