Crusaders Best Warriors

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a 90-57 final on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors shot 33.9% from the field in the loss.  Breanna Richardson led the team with 14 points.  Richardson was followed by Emily Waters with nine points and Iva Krstevska with eight.  Krstevska led the team with four of the 10 assists.  Southern Wesleyan posted 29 rebounds with Lisana Burnett leading the team with seven.  Burnett went on to lead the team with four of the eight steals.  Waters led the team with two of the four blocks in  the loss.

How It Happened

Belmont Abbey jumped out on top early as Keyanna Spivey made a jump shot, but the Warriors quickly tied it up on a layup by Emily Waters.  The Crusaders continued to push ahead of the Warriors taking a 10-2 point lead on a three point shot by Hannah Roney.  A three point shot by Iva Krstevska kept the Warriors within five points of the Crusaders.

Iva Krstevska kicked off the second quarter with a three point jump shot to put Southern Wesleyan down 28-15.  Belmont Abbey continued to extend their lead on a three point shot by Alexis Schulz to give them a 31-15 point advantage.  Back-to-back baskets by Breanna Richardson and Lonesha Lee put the score at 21-41. Despite free throws by Ricahrdson and Lisana Burnett, Belmont Abbey led the game 44-28 at the half.

A layup by Manuela Fungate put the Crusaders on top 46-28 to kick off the third quarter.  Southern Wesleyan continued to fight back as Breanna Richardson and Emily Waters sunk baskets to put the Warriors 48-32 behind Belmont Abbey.  A jump shot by Iva Krstevska and three point shot by Richardson put the Warriors within 13-points.

The Crusaders continued to maintain the lead as Manuela Fungate made a layup to give them a 68-45 point advantage.  Back-to-back layups by Emily Waters put the Warriors down 49-71.  Despite baskets by Meredith Ray and KatyBeth Rentz, the Warriors fell to the Crusaders 90-57.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will travel to Franklin Springs, GA on January 16 to take on the Emmanuel Lions at 5:30 p.m.  They will remain on the road on January 19 as they travel to Gaffney, SC to take on the Limestone Saints at 2 p.m.  The Warriors will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 21 as they host the Lees-McRae Bobcats.
