Warriors Unable to Rise Above Early Saints Lead

Gaffney, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Limestone Saints in a 109-50 final score on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors posted a 31.5% field goal percentage in the loss to the Saints.  Denisha Hall and Shawndre' Young led the team with 10 points apiece in the loss to the Saints.  The Warriors had six assists with Tanayja Williams and Young each recorded two.  Hall and KatyBeth Rentz had the lone steals of the game, while Emily Waters posted the lone block.  Southern Wesleyan had 23 rebounds with Tanayja Williams leading the team with four.

How It Happened

The Limestone Saints took a 2-0 lead early on a layup by Schekinah Bimpa.  Back-to-back three point shots allowed the Saints to extend their lead 14-0.  A layup by Emily Waters allowed the Warriors to get on the board and come to 2-17 behind the Saints.  The Warriors continued to fight back with baskets by Waters and Tanayja Williams.

The Warriors kicked off the second quarter with a layup by Tanayja Williams to come to 15-36 behind the Saints.  Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure back with free throws by Shawndre' Young and Denisha Hall to put them down 19-38.  Despite a last second jump shot by Denisha Hall, the Warriors trailed the Saints 55-26 at the half.

The Saints maintained the lead in the third quarter on back-to-back jump shots by Schekinah Bimpa to take a 59-26 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan countered with layups by Denisha Hall and Lisana Burnett to come to 30-69 behind Limestone.  Breanna Richardson made a jump shot to put the Warriors down 36-84.

Limestone continued to maintain control in the final quarter, but a three point shot by Lonesha Lee allowed the Warriors to come to 42-91 behind the Saints.  A three point shot from Shawndre' Young and a layup by Emily Waters put the Warriors down 47-97.  The Saints continued to pressure the Warriors defense, but a three point shot by Young put the Warriors down 50-102.  The Saints went on to win the game 109-50.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 21 as they host the Lees-McRae Bobcats at 4 p.m.  They will remain at home on January 24 as they host the Erskine College Flying Fleet at 5:30 p.m.
