Warriors Fall in Final Quarter to Trojans

Mount Olive, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the University of Mount Olive Trojans in a 76-68 final score on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors shot 40.4% from the field and went 43.8% from past the three point line in the loss to the Trojans.  Breanna Richardson led the Warriors with 16 points.  Richardson was followed by Emily Waters with 15 points, and Jessica Sparks and Iva Krstevska with 11 points each.  Southern Wesleyan had 14 assists in the loss with Krstevska leading the Warriors with six.  She was followed by Waters with three.

Southern Wesleyan recorded 28 rebounds in the loss.  Breanna Richardson led the team with six.  She was followed by Emily Waters with five, and Jessica Sparks and Lonesha Lee with four each.  The Warriors had eight steals.  Richardson led the team with three, while Iva Krstevska followed with two.

"We really competed today.  Much credit to Mount Olive also.  It was good to see our team play in this type of game where a couple plays dictate the outcome.  We rebounded better today and had a balanced offensive effort.  We are moving forward which is a good place to be this time of the year."

 

How It Happened

The Warriors took a 1-0 early on a free throw by Lisana Burnett, but the Trojans countered with a layup by Azariah Fields to allow Mount Olive to take a 2-1 lead.  Layups by Burnett kept the Warriors within one of the Trojans to make the score 6-7.  The University of Mount Olive took a eight point lead over Southern Wesleyan on a three point jump shot by Felecity Havens.  The Warriors continued to challenge back as Breanna Richardson and Denisha Hall made baskets to put them down 12-16.

Mount Olive scored three baskets in a row to kick off the second quarter to take a 22-14 point advantage over Southern Wesleyan, but Emily Waters passed the ball over to Lisana Burnett to put the Warriors down 16-24.  The Trojans continued to pressure as Felicity Havens and Jada Bacchus each made baskets.  However, layups by Breanna Richardson and Emily Waters cut the Trojans lead to 13-points.  A three point basket by Iva Krstevska allowed the Warriors to cut the Trojans lead to 31-35 at the half.

Southern Wesleyan kicked off the third quarter with a three point shot by Breanna Richardson to put the Warriors down 34-35 to the Trojans.  The Warriors continued to pressure as Emily Waters made back-to-back layups to tie the game 38-38.  Southern Wesleyan took a one point lead as Jessica Sparks made three point baskets to make the score 45-44.  Mount Olive challenged to put the Trojans within five on a jump shot by Azariah Fields.

The Trojans kicked off the final quarter with a three point shot by Fields to make the score 54-50.  A three point shot by Leah Williams allowed the Trojans to regain a 58-56 point advantage over the Warriors.  Free throws by Lonesha Lee and a layup by Emily Waters put the Warriors down one to the Trojans 61-62.  The Warriors would not be silenced as Iva Krstevska took a three point shot to put Southern Wesleyan back on top 64-63, but the Trojans countered with a three point basket of their own to take a 66-64 point advantage.  Mount Olive went on to win the game 76-68.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on January 30 at 5:30 p.m.  They will then travel to Bristol, TN to take on the King Tornado on February 2.  They will then travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on the Converse Valkyries on February 6 at 6:30 p.m.
