Warriors Push Past Bruins In Overtime

Greenville, SC – Southern Wesleyan won their first game of the 2018 season in a 2-1 final against the Bob Jones Bruins on Thursday evening in overtime.

The Warriors put up 14 shots and six shots on goal.  Ashley Romanowski led the team with five shots and three shots on goal, with Rachel Curtis following her with three shots and one shot on goal.  Curtis and Makala Latsch had the lone goals for the Warriors.  Jen Golio played the whole game in goal for the Warriors while recording four saves.

"What an opening game!  So proud of the team for continuing to play hard and find a way to win in overtime.  We showed a lot of patience tonight, kept good shape, covered each other and, in the end, that was the difference."

 

How It Happened

Southern Wesleyan battled against the Bob Jones Bruins on Thursday evening.  The Warriors and Bruins exchanged shots through the first half.  Ashley Romanowski and Rachel Curtis each taking shots.  With just under a minute late, Makala Latsch took the ball away from the Bruin defense and drove the ball into the corner of the net to put the Warriors up 1-0 at the half.

Bob Jones countered early in the second half with a goal to tie the game 1-1.  Both teams challenged, but both the Warriors and Bruins defenses kept the balls from the net.  Bob Jones took a shot that was close, but Jen Golio saved the ball to keep the game tied.

In the first overtime period, the Bruins took several opportunities, but Jen Golio scooped up the ball to prevent them from taking the lead.  Ashley Romanowski made a run through the defense, but the Bruins goalkeeper blocked the net with two minutes left in the first overtime period.  The Warriors continued to pressure Romanowski redirected the ball to Rachel Curtis.  Curtis took the ball and drove it into the net to let Southern Wesleyan take a 2-1 victory.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Columbia, South Carolina as they take on the Columbia International Rams at 7 p.m.  They will then open up at home on September 5 as the GA Southwestern Canes come to Childs Field at 5 p.m.
