Southern Wesleyan Claims Runner-Up in Conference Championship

Winston-Salem, NC – Southern Wesleyan picked up their third straight runner-up award in the Conference Carolinas Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday.  The Warriors finished behind the University of Mount Olive Trojans.

How It Happened

Track Results

60 Meters : In the 60 meters, Mycherie Onwuzuruike led the Warriors with a fifth place finish with a time of 7.86.  She was closely followed by teammates Michele Beugre and Lyric King in sixth and seventh place.  Beugre took sixth with a time of 7.88, while King finished in seventh with a time of 7.95.

60 Meter Hurdles : Chyna Campbell and Skylar Julian took fourth and sixth in the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles to advance to the finals.  Julian took fourth in the finals with a time of 9.21.

200 Meters : In the 200 meters, Michele Beugre took third with a time of 25.67.  Teammate Lyric King took sixth with a time of 26.13, while Mycherie Onwuuruike took eighth with a time of 26.24.

400 Meters : Amanda Trapp led the Warriors in the 400 meters, claiming fourth place with a time of 59.58.  Trapp was followed by Jami Lewis in sixth place with a time of 1:00.27.

800 Meters : Hayley Singletary took tenth place for the Warriors in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.13.  Singletary was followed by Taylor Broadwell in 15th with a time of 2:37.36.

Mile : Madison Lewellen finished just shy of the top ten in the mile.  Lewellen finished with a time of 5:58.54 to take 13th in the championship.

3000 Meters : Southern Wesleyan took third in the 3000 meters as Maggie Rice crossed the finish line with a time of 11:02.31.  Kyra Hood followed in eighth place with a time of 11:32.92.

4000m Distance Medley Relay : The Warriors team of Hayley Singletary, Kayla Achenbach, Taylor Broadwell and Maggie Rice finished seconds behind the North Greenville team of Roach, Arnold, Valentine and Whisman.  Singletary, Achenbach, Broadwell and Rice claimed second place with a time of 13:13.72.

4x400 Meter Relay : Southern Wesleyan took first in the 4x400 meter relay.  Lyric King, Amanda Trapp, Michele Beugre and Jami Lewis claimed first when they crossed the finish line with a time of 3:59.73 several seconds ahead of the Mount Olive team of Beckford, Kafi, Moncrief and Thring.

 

Field Results

Weight Throw : Kelsie Smith took third place for the Warriors in the weight throw as she threw a distance of 14.71 meters to set a new school record.  Chyna Cannon followed in ninth place with a distance of 12.99.

Long Jump : In the long jump, Mycherie Onwuzuruike set a new Conference Carolinas and school record with a distance of 5.81 meters to claim first place.  Her distance put her in 14th in the nation among long jumpers.  Onwuzuruike was followed by A'Miracle Scott in second place with a distance of 5.51 meters.

Pole Vault : Haley McLaughlin took third in the pole vault with a height of 2.97 meters.

Triple Jump : Freshman Mycherie Onwuzuruike took third in the triple jump as she jumped a distance of 11.42 meters.  She was followed by teammate Tierra Johnson in sixth place with a distance of 10.65 meters.

High Jump : Tierra Johnson cleared a height of 1.47 meters in the high jump to put her in fifth place.

Shot Put : Paris West led the Warriors in the shot put as her throw of 12.05 meters put her in second place. West was followed by teammate Kelsie Smith in 10th place with a throw of 10.45 meters.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will kick off their Outdoor Track and Field season on March 2 at the Berry Invitational.  They will then compete in the Charlotte 49ers Classic in Charlotte, NC on March 15 and 16.
