Warriors Named Conference Carolinas Runner-Up

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan took their third consecutive Runner-Up title in the Conference Carolinas Championship.  The Warriors set many Conference Carolinas and school records during the meet while gaining the most points ever scored in a conference championship meet.  Mycherie Onwuzuruike was named the Freshman of the Year at the conclusion of the meet.

How It Happened

Track Events

100 Meters : Southern Wesleyan took second and fourth place in the 100 meters. Lyric King led the Warriors with a second place finish with a time of 12.05.  She was followed by teammate Mycherie Onwuzuruike in fourth with a time of 12.26.

100 Meter Hurdles : Both Chyna Campbell and Skylar Julian advanced to the finals in the 100 meter hurdles.  In the finals, Chyna Campbell took second place with a time of 14.43.  She was followed by Skylar Julian in sixth place with a time of 14.82.

200 Meters : In the 200 meters, Michele Beugre took second place with a time of 24.45.  She was followed by Lyric King in sixth place with a time of 25.55.

400 Meters : Junior Jami Lewis took first place in the 400 meter as she crossed the finish line with a time of 55.22.  Her time set a new school and conference record along with set a provisional mark.  Lewis is now 17th in Division II in the 400 meter.

400 Meter Hurdles : Sophomore Keyanna Williams took fifth place with a time of 1:05.73.

800 Meters : In the 800 meters, the Warriors took second place as Hayley Singletary crossed the finish line with a time of 2:21.16.

1500 Meters : Maggie Rice and Madison Lewellen advanced to the finals in the 1500 meters.  In the finals, Rice took sixth with a time of 5:08.50 and Lewellen took eighth with a time of 5:12.29.

5000 Meters : The Warriors were led by Maggie Rice and Kyra Hood in the 5000 meters.  Rice led the Warriors to take fifth with a time of 19:55.46.  Rice was followed by Hood in seventh with a time of 20:09.98.

4 x 100 Meter Relay : Southern Wesleyan defeated the field in the 4x100 meter relay as Michele Beugre, Jami Lewis, Lyric King and Amanda Trapp soared past the other teams in the field with a time of 45.98.  Their time put them as the sixth fastest relay team in the nation.  The Warriors also set conference and school records with the time.

4 x 400 Meter Relay : The Warriors team of Lyric King, Michele Beugre, Amanda Trapp and Jami Lewis led the Conference Carolinas 4x400 field, taking first place with a time of 3:49.77.

 

Field Events

Hammer Throw : Kelsie Smith led the Warriors in the hammer throw as she took second place with a throw of 49.31 meters.

Long Jump : The Warriors set a new school in the long jump as Mycherie Onwuzuruike took first place with a jump of 5.85 meters.  Her distance allowed her to set new school and conference records along with put her in 20th in the nation as a provisional qualifier.  Teammate A'Miracle Scott followed her in fifth place with a distance of 5.56 meters.

High Jump : Tierra Johnson took eighth place in the high jump during the championship meet with a height of 1.45 meters.

Javelin : In the javelin, Misha Mercuis took 10th with a distance of 27.33 meters and Chloe Foster took 12th with a distance of 25.36 meters.

Triple Jump : In the triple jump, Mycherie Onwuzuruike took fourth place with a distance of 11.41 meters.  Teammate Tierra Johnson took eighth place with a distance of 10.68 meters.

Shot Put : The Warriors took second and third place in the women's shot put.  Paris West took second place with a throw of 12.74 meters to set a new school record.  She was followed by teammate Kelsie Smith in third place with a distance of 12.12 meters thrown.  The Warriors field was wrapped up by Chyna Cannon who threw a distance of 10.23 meters to take 13th place.

Pole Vault : Haley McLaughlin took seventh place in the pole vault with a height of 2.75 meters.

Discus : Paris West claimed first place in the discus as she threw a 39.52 meters in the championship meet.  Her throw allowed her to set a new school and conference record.  She was followed by teammate Chyna Cannon in eighth place with a throw of 34.98 meters.  Kelsie Smith took 19th with a throw of 28.88 meters.

Southern Wesleyan will next take place in the Lenoir-Rhyne Last Chance meet on Mary 11 and 12th.
