Warriors Fall To Cobras

Newberry, S.C. – Southern Wesleyan falls in final match of Newberry Volleyball Invitational to Coker College in a 3-0 final.

The Warriors posted 29 kills in the loss, with freshman Olivia Johnson and senior Paige O'Connor leading the way with eight kills apiece.  Annika Jones let the team in assists with 21.  Shelby Sheets and Anna Hughey each posted a service ace in the loss.  Southern Wesleyan had 24 digs during the loss.  Katie Anderson led the team with nine.  The Warriors had three blocks in the loss.

How It Happened

Set One

Southern Wesleyan took the lead early in the first set on a kill by junior Annika Jones.  However, the Cobras fought back to take a 6-3 lead over the Warriors.  Southern Wesleyan rallied back to come behind the Cobras 8-7, but the Cobras regained their lead on a kill by Annie Mansfield.  The Warriors would not go quietly, pushing back throughout the final points of the match.  However, they could not pull ahead as the Cobras won the first set 25-21.

Set Two

Coker took an early lead in the second set of the match, but Southern Wesleyan quickly tied it and then pulled ahead on kills by Olivia Johnson.  The Cobras rallied back to tie the match 6-6.  However, a service error gave the Warriors a 7-6 point lead.  Coker regained the lead after a kill by Madison Bingle, but a kill by senior Kendall Vallancourt allowed the Warriors to tie the set up once again.  However, the Cobras quickly regained control of the match, taking a 14-9 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan rallied back, but were unable to overcome the Coker lead as the Cobras won the second set 25-17.

Set Three

Coker took a 4-0 lead in the final set of the match before the Warriors were able to put a point on the board from a kill by senior Shelby Sheets.  The Cobras surged forward despite the Warrior point, putting several more points on the board to bring their lead to 17-5.  Kills by Kendall Vallancourt and Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to cut the Cobras lead to ten points.  However, they were unable to come around the point deficit to win as the Cobras won the final set 25-13.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to take on the Shorter Hawks on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 p.m.  They will then take part in their second tournament of the season in the Emmanuel Tournament September 8-9.  They will play in four matches throughout the tournament.
