Warriors Fall In Tough Match to Trojans

Mount Olive, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan fell in a tough competition against the Mount Olive Trojans in a 3-2 final.

The Warriors posted 53 kills in the loss to Mount Olive.  Paige O'Connor led the team with 22 kills.  Annika Jones led the team in assists with 44.  Southern Wesleyan had 10 service aces with senior O'Connor leading the team with three.  Katie Anderson and Jones both followed O'Connor with two aces in the loss.  Anderson led the team with 23 digs.  She was followed by Shelby Sheets with 15 digs and Anna Hughey with 13.  Kendall Vallancourt led the team with four of the 11 blocks the Warriors posted.

How It Happened

Set One

The Trojans struck first to take a 1-0 lead, but an attack error allowed the Warriors to tie the set 1-1.  However, Mount Olive regained a 4-2 point lead despite a kill by Paige O'Connor.  Mount Olive surged ahead to take a 14-6 point lead over Southern Wesleyan.  Kills by Annika Jones, Paige O'Connor, and Olivia Johnson put the Warriors to three points behind Mount Olive and bring the score to 19-16.  Southern Wesleyan challenged, but Mount Olive won the first set 25-20.

Set Two

Paige O'Connor led off with a kill to give Southern Wesleyan a 1-0 lead over Mount Olive.  The Trojans countered to tie, but a kill by senior Kendall Vallancourt gave the Warriors a 2-1 point advantage.  Mount Olive pressured, but kills by Olivia Johnson and attack errors by Trojans gave Southern Wesleyan an 11-4 point lead over the Trojans.  The Trojans rallied back to score seven points to come to 16-11 behind the Warriors, but kills by Paige O'Connor allowed the Warriors to take a 19-12 point lead.  Kills by Courtney Price gave the Warriors a 25-17 victory over the Trojans of Mount Olive in the second set.

Set Three

Southern Wesleyan struck first in the third set, taking a 3-2 point lead on an error, service ace by Katie Anderson and kill by Paige O'Connor.  The Warriors surged ahead with kills by Courtney Price and Paige O'Connor, taking a 10-3 point lead over the Trojans.  Mount Olive countered, but kills by Shelby Sheets, O'Connor and Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to take a 21-11 point lead.  Southern Wesleyan won the second set in a 25-12 final.

Set Four

A kill by Shelby Sheets and an attack error by Trojan Brittany Barnett gave the Warriors a 2-0 point advantage in the fourth set of the evening.  Mount Olive countered the kills by the Warriors by tying the fourth set 9-9 on service aces by Lindsea Jones.  However kills by freshman Olivia Johnson and senior Shelby Sheets allowed the Warriors to take a 12-10 point lead, and then a service ace by Kendall Vallancourt allowed the Warriors to lengthen their lead to 13-10.  Southern Wesleyan took their lead to 20-16 on a service ace by Paige O'Connor and kills by Annika Jones and O'Connor.  However, the Trojans rallied back to tie the set and then take a 23-22 point lead on kills by Cyerra Carter and Britni Johnson.  Mount Olive won the fourth set 25-22.

Set Five

The Trojans started the fifth and final set with a kill, but Paige O'Connor countered to allow the Warriors to tie the set 1-1 with a kill.  Mount Olive pulled ahead to take a 4-2 point lead, but the Warriors would not go down without a fight as kills by Olivia Johnson and Kendall Vallancourt put the Warriors to 6-8 behind the Trojans.  The Trojans lengthened their lead to 11-6.  Olivia Johnson made a kill to bring the score to 11-7.  Kills by Paige O'Connor brought the Warriors to 14-11 behind the Trojans.  However, the Trojans won the final set in a 15-11 final.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to take on the Barton Bulldogs on September 23 at 2 p.m.  The Warriors will then return home to take on the Limestone Saints on September 29 at 7 p.m.
