Southern Wesleyan Falls in Semifinals to Barton

Wilson, N.C. – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Barton College Bulldogs in the Conference Carolinas Semifinals in a 3-0 final score.

The Warriors posted 25 kills in the loss, with senior Paige O'Connor leading the team with 12.  Annika Jones delivered 21 assists in the loss.  Southern Wesleyan had 54 digs with Anna Martin leading the team with 20.  Anna Hughey followed with 10 digs.  Of the 13 blocks in the match, senior Kendall Vallancourt boasted four.

How It Happened

Set One

The Bulldogs struck first the semi-finals, putting two points on the board before a kill by Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to come 2-1 behind Barton.  However Barton charged ahead, scoring nine points before Katie Anderson made a kill to put the Warriors 3-11 behind the Bulldogs.  Kills by Olivia Johnson and Paige O'Connor put the Warriors ten points behind Barton.  Barton won the first set 25-12.

Set Two

The Bulldogs struck first on an ace by Ashley Owen, but a kill by Paige O'Connor allowed the Warriors to tie the set 1-1.  Barton pushed forward, but Southern Wesleyan would not go down without a fight as Paige O'Connor, Kendall Vallancourt and Katie Anderson allowed them to tie the Bulldogs 7-7 in the second set.  Southern Wesleyan fought back, coming to within four of Barton.  Blocks by Courtney Price and Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to bring the score to 15-21.  Southern Wesleyan fought back, scoring ten consecutive points on attack errors by the Bulldogs and blocks by Kendall Vallancourt and Annika Jones.  However, the rally was late as the Bulldogs won the second set 25-21.

Set Three

Barton went on a six point run before an attack error and blocks by Shelby Sheets and Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to put a point on a board.  Kills by Paige O'Connor and blocks by Kendall Vallancourt and O'Connor allowed the Warriors to fight back and make the score 5-12.  The Bulldogs took a ten point lead on a kill by Kaytlin Elkins.  However, a kills by Kendall Vallancourt Olivia Johnson and attack errors by the Bulldogs allowed the Warriors to rally back to 11-16 behind Barton.  Southern Wesleyan fought on with kills by Paige O'Connor and Johnson to keep the Warriors in the fight and make the score 13-19.  Barton pushed on, but Southern Wesleyan held their ground.  However, the Bulldogs won the final set 25-18.

Southern Wesleyan will next compete in the NCCAA South Regionals on November 17th.  They will take on the John Wesley Lions at 4 p.m.
