Aiken, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in their first two matches of the USC Aiken Opening Weekend Tournament. The Warriors fell to the Barry Buccaneers 3-0 in the first game, and to the USC Aiken Pacers 3-0 in the second game.
The Warriors put up 20 kills in the first game loss. Katie Anderson, Danairi Malave and Davis Hendricks each recorded four kills in the loss. Maggie Jones recorded 12 of the 18 assists of the first game. Southern Wesleyan posted 37 digs with Anna Martin leading the team with 12.
Southern Wesleyan recorded 28 kills in the second game of the afternoon. Katie Anderson led the team with 10 kills. Olivia Johnson followed Anderson with eight kills. Maggie Jones and Annika Jones led the Warriors with a combined 25 of the 27 assists. Maggie Jones led with 14 assists while Annika Jones had 11. Anderson went on to lead the Warriors in digs with 16. Southern Wesleyan posted seven blocks, with Danairi Malave leading the team with three.

Southern Wesleyan took the first point in the first set of the afternoon on a service error by the Buccaneers. Barry fought back with an ace and kill by Kristina Filimonova to put them on top 3-1. The Buccaneers continued to push ahead to take an 18-7 point lead. A kill by Jesse Soles put the Warriors within ten and then a kill by Katie Anderson brought the score to 19-10. Barry won the first set in a 25-12 final.
Barry jumped out in front in the second set with several kills in a row. A kill by Anna Martin put the Warriors down 7-3. Back-to-back kills by Danairi Malave brought the Warriors within four and made the score 10-6. The Buccaneers pushed their lead further. Despite a late kill by Davis Hendricks, Barry won the game 25-13.
The Buccaneers took a 2-0 lead on a service ace and kill by Kishara Gordon, but a kill by Jesse Soles put the Warriors down 2-1. Back-to-back kills by Davis Hendricks and Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to take a 5-4 point lead. Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure in the third set with kills by Hendricks and Danairi Malave to push their lead to 9-6. Barry pushed ahead to take an 11-10 lead, but a kill by Katie Anderson allowed the Warriors to tie the game. A kill by Danairi Malave and then an ace by Anna Martin put the Warriors on top 15-14. Barry pressured Southern Wesleyan, but a kill by Darby Sheets allowed the Warriors to remain within one point. The Warriors continued to challenge, but the Buccaneers won the set 25-22.
SWU vs USC Aiken
Southern Wesleyan took the first kill of the match on a shot by Olivia Johnson. The Warriors and the Pacers fought back and forth, exchanging the lead several times before USC Aiken. The Pacers pushed ahead, but a kill by Danairi Malave made the score 5-8. Kills by Katie Anderson put the Warriors within two and made the score 7-9. USC Aiken took a 15-10 point lead, but a kill by Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to come within four points of the Pacers. Freshman Darby Sheets put the Warriors within three and to make the score 16-19. Southern Wesleyan continued to press, but they could not pass USC Aiken as the Pacers won the first set 25-18.
USC Aiken took an early lead in the second set, but back-to-back kills by Katie Anderson put the Warriors down 4-3. An attack error by the Pacers allowed the Warriors to tie the game at four. Katlyn Von Ins delivered back-to-back service aces gave Southern Wesleyan a 6-4 point advantage. USC Aiken countered, but a kill by Katie Anderson kept the Warriors within two points of the Pacers. Kills by Olivia Johnson and Davis Hendricks allowed the Warriors to stay within two points of USC Aiken. The Pacers went on to win the game 25-15.

Kills by Danairi and Katie Anderso put the Warriors down 7-9. The Pacers raced ahead, but kills by Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson sallowed them to come to four behind USC Aiken and make the score 9-13. Each time the Pacers pressed ahead, the Warriors countered, keeping the game within a few points. However, USC Aiken won the final set 25-20.
Southern Wesleyan will continue competing in the USC Aiken Opening Weekend Tournament on August 25 as they take on the Johnson C Smith Golden Bulls. They will then travel to Montgomery, Alabama as they compete in the Auburn University at Montgomery Tournament on August 31 and September 1.
