Warriors Challenge But Unable To Pass Crusaders

Tigerville, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell in an exciting match against North Greenville in a 3-1 final on Wednesday evening.

The Warriors posted 40 kills in the loss to the Crusaders with Olivia Johnson recorded 15 kills.  She was followed by Katie Anderson with 10.  Senior Annika Jones led the team with 32 of the 36 assists of the afternoon.  Southern Wesleyan posted 52 digs with Anderson leading the team with 17.  Anderson was followed by Anna Martin with 14 and Annika Jones with 10.  Southern Wesleyan recorded five aces with Annika Jones leading the team with two.  The Warriors went on to have 11 blocks with Sarah Stone leading the team with four and Olivia Johnson following her with three.

How It Happened

Set One

Southern Wesleyan jumped out in the first set on a kill by Sarah Stone, but the Crusaders countered and put three points on the board to put them on top 3-1.  A kill by Annika Jones and an attack error by North Greenville allowed the Warriors to tie the first set up at three.  A kill by Olivia Johnson and a service ace by Sarah Stone allowed the Warriors to jump out on top 5-4.  North Greenville continued to push ahead, but the Warriors countered to tie the first set at seven on kills by Katie Anderson and Olivia Johnson.  The Crusaders continued to pressure the Warriors, but the Warriors countered with a kill and service ace by Katie Anderson to put them on top 14-13.  However, the Crusaders fought back to win the first set 25-21.

Set Two

The Crusaders took an early lead in the second set, but the Warriors countered with a kill by Olivia Johnson to make the score 2-1.  Back-to-back service aces by Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to take a 3-2 point lead.  The Crusaders and Warriors continued to battle it out, but kills by Davis Hendricks and Olivia Johnson allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 7-5 lead.  North Greenville and Southern Wesleyan continued to battle and the Crusaders pushed ahead, but a kill by Sarah Stone and an attack error allowed the Warriors to tie the second set 17-17.  A service ace by Haley Martin put the Warriors on top 21-17.  The Warriors continued to persevere with kills by Olivia Johnson and Danairi Malave to win the set 25-19.

Set Three

North Greenville jumped out on top early in the third set to take a 2-0 lead, but a kill by Katie Anderson allowed Southern Wesleyan to come to 2-1.  However, the Crusaders continued to put on the pressure with a kill by Katie McManaway and service aces by Johna Robbins to put them ahead 5-1.  A kill by Davis Hendricks allowed the Warriors to cut the Crusaders lead to 9-4.  Southern Wesleyan would not let North Greenville's lead dampen their attacks as they pushed onward to come to 11-9 behind the Crusaders.  Kills by Annika Jones and Olivia Johnson put the Warriors within three of the Crusaders and made the score 15-12.  Davis Hendricks laid down a kill to allow the Warriors to tie the Crusaders 20-20.  North Greenville pushed ahead taking a 24-21 point advantage, but Southern Wesleyan challenged back with kills by Olivia Johnson and Katie Anderson to tie the set 24-24.  However, the Crusaders pushed ahead to win the third set 26-24.

Set Four

Southern Wesleyan jumped out first in the fourth set on a kill by Olivia Johnson.  North Greenville countered to tie the set, but a kill by Johnson allowed the Warriors to remain in the lead.  Johnson delivered yet another kill to come 12-7 behind the Crusaders.  The Crusaders continue to press ahead to put them ahead 17-9.  North Greenville continued to put up a fight to win the final set 25-14.


What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on September 28 as they host the Limestone Saints at 7 p.m.  They will stay home on September 29 as they take on the Converse Valkyries at 2 p.m.
