Spartanburg, SC – Southern Wesleyan took down the Converse Valkyries in a 3-1 final on Wednesday night.
The Warriors posted 54 kills in the victory over the Valkyries. Olivia Johnson led the team with 22 kills. The Warriors posted 51 assists with senior setter Annika Jones recording 45. Southern Wesleyan had six aces with Katie Anderson leading the team with four. The Warriors had 82 digs. Anderson led the team with 22. She was followed by Olivia Johnson and Annika Jones with 15 each. Courtney Price, Annika Jones and Danairi Malave led the team with four blocks each.

How It Happened
The Warriors jumped out early with a kill by Darby Sheets to put them up 1-0. Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure the Valkyrie defense with kills by Olivia Johnson and Courtney Price to maintain a 5-4. Converse challenged, but kills by Danairi Malave and Johnson allowed the Warriors to maintain the lead and make the score 13-10. Back-to-back kills by Davis Hendricks put the Warriors on top 17-13. The Warriors went on to win the first set in a 25-21 final.
Southern Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead on a kill by Darby Sheets, but the Valkyries fought back with five consecutive points to take a 5-1 point lead. Kills by Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson to put the Warriors down 3-5. The Valkyries continued to pressure taking an 11-5 point lead over the Warriors. Converse continued to pressure Southern Wesleyan to win the second set 25-21.
The Warriors took an early lead in the third set with a kill by Davis Hendricks to take a 2-0 lead. The Valkyries countered with seven consecutive points to take a 7-2 point lead. Southern Wesleyan would not be stopped as they fought back with kills by Hendricks and Olivia Johnson and an ace by Katlyn Von Ins to tie the third set 15-15. The Warriors continued to pressure the Valkyries to 27-25.
A kill by Olivia Johnson put the Warriors up 1-0 in the fourth set, but the Valkyries countered with a kill by Kiara Cannon to tie the set 1-1. Southern Wesleyan continued to push ahead with kills by Courtney Price and Johsnon, and an ace by Price to put them on top 8-4. The Warriors pushed on with kills by Danairi Malave and Katlyn Von Ins to take 14-7 point lead. Converse fought back, but an ace by Katie Anderson allowed the Warriors to maintain an 18-9 point advantage. The Warriors went on to win the final set 25-16.
Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Belmont Abbey to face the Crusaders on October 5 at 7p.m. They will remain on road as they take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats at noon on October 6.
