Belmont, NC – Southern Wesleyan took down the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in an exciting five set match to win 3-2 on Friday evening.
The Warriors delivered 57 kills in the Friday evening victory with sophomore Olivia Johnson leading the team with 22 kills. Annika Jones recorded 41 of the 53 assists for the Warriors. Five Warriors recorded one service ace apiece. Southern Wesleyan posted 80 digs. Olivia Johnson led the team with 26 digs. Johnson was followed by Katie Anderson with 12 and Haley Martin with 11. The Warriors put up 13 blocks with three Warriors posting three blocks.

How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan struck first on a kill by senior Courtney Price to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead, however Belmont Abbey quickly countered to tie the set 1-1. The Crusaders pushed ahead, but Darby Sheets snuck in back-to-back kills to allow the Warriors to tie the set 3-3. Olivia Johnson and Danairi Malave blocked the Crusaders' ball to allow the Warriors to stay within striking distance and come to 9-6 behind Belmont Abbey. Belmont Abbey continued to press ahead to take a 20-13 point lead over Southern Wesleyan. Olivia Johnson took a kill off a block to put the Warriors down 21-14 to the Crusaders. The Warriors would not go down quietly with kills by Darby Sheets and Annika Jones, but the Crusaders won the first set 25-19.
Belmont Abbey charged ahead in the second set, but an attack error and an assisted block by Courtney Price and Davis Hendricks allowed the Warriors to tie the set 2-2. The Warriors continued to chip away at the Crusaders lead with kills by Price and Olivia Johnson. The set went back and forth with Belmont Abbey pushing ahead and Southern Wesleyan countering their every point. The Warriors took a 10-8 point lead on errors by the Crusaders. Kills by Darby Sheets and Davis Hendricks allowed the Warriors to take a 13-10 point lead. A service ace by Courtney Price and a powerful kill by Olivia Johnson off a pass from Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to take a 17-14 point lead. An attack error by Belmont Abbey and kills by Price and Hendricks allowed the Warriors to take their lead to 23-19. The Warriors went on to win the second set 25-20.
The Crusaders took a 2-1 point lead early on with a kill by Mackenzie Chrapliwy. Southern Wesleyan continued to fight with a kill by Darby Sheets to put the Warriors down 4-5 to the Crusaders. Southern Wesleyan pressured the Belmont Abbey Crusaders with a kill by Danairi Malave to put the Warriors on top 8-6. Courtney Price took a pass from Annika Jones and delivered a deep kill to put the Warriors on top 11-9. An assisted block by Price and Davis Hendricks allowed the Warriors to take their advantage to 13-10. Belmont Abbey would not go down quietly as they fought back to tie the set 16-16. The Warriors continued to put up a fight with a kill by Olivia Johnson to put them behind the Crusaders 18-19. Belmont Abbey continued to challenge Southern Wesleyan as they won the third set 25-19.
The Warriors jumped out on top early with a kill by Olivia Johnson to give them a 1-0 lead in the fourth set. The Crusaders countered seconds later with a kill of their own by Mackenzie Chrapliwy. Johnson continued to challenge Belmont Abbey with another kill to put the Warriors behind the Crusaders 5-4. An assisted block by Davis Hendricks and Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to come within one of the Crusaders. Hendricks laid down a kill to give the Warriors a 10-9 advantage in the fourth set of the evening. Kills by Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to continue to lead the Crusaders in the fourth set 16-14. Belmont Abbey continued to push ahead, but a kill by Darby Sheets put the Warriors down 19-20 to the Crusaders. Southern Wesleyan fought back to win the fourth set 25-23 and force a fifth set.
Southern Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead on an ace by Haley Martin. The Warriors jumped out in front with back-to-back kills by Olivia Johnson to take a 4-1 lead. The Crusaders countered, but an ace by Johnson and a kill by Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to take a 9-6 lead. The set went back and forth, but a kill by Johnson allowed the Warriors to take a 13-12 point advantage. Back-to-back attack errors by the Crusaders allowed the Warriors to push ahead 15-14. The Crusaders fought back to tie, but a kill by Davis Hendricks and a service ace by Annika Jones to win 17-15 and take the game.
Southern Wesleyan will remain on the road as they travel to Banner Elk, NC to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats on October 6 at noon. The Warriors will return to Historic Tysinger Gymansium on October 12 and 13. They will take on the Erskine Flying Fleet on October 12 at 7 p.m. and the Emmanuel Lions on October 13 at 2 p.m.
