Warriors Unable to Silence Lions

Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Emmanuel Lions in a 3-1 final on Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors recorded 28 kills in the loss to the Lions.  Olivia Johnson led the team with 14 kills.  Annika Jones had 26 of the 28 assists of the evening, and both Katie Anderson and Anna Martin had service aces.  Southern Wesleyan posted 51 digs, with Anderson leading the team with 14 and Johnson following with 13.  Courtney Price led the team with three blocks.

How It Happened

Set One

The Emmanuel Lions attacked early with a kill by Mia McKensey, but a kill by Sarah Stone allowed the Warriors to tie the first set 1-1.  However, the Lions charged ahead to take a 11-3 point advantage before a kill by Olivia Johnson and Sarah Stone allowed the Warriors to come to 14-6 behind Emmanuel.  The Lions remained on the offensive and went on to win the first set 25-8.

Set Two

The Lions took a 2-0 lead before a kill by Sarah Stone allowed the Warriors to get on the board.  The Warriors continued to battle with kills by Courtney Price and Olivia Johnson to put them down 11-6, however the Lions continue to surge ahead with a kill by Mia McKensey to give them a ten point advantage.  Despite kills by Price and Johnson, Emmanuel won the second set 25-13.

Set Three

Southern Wesleyan would not be silenced in the third set, challenging Emmanuel's every point with kills by Davis Hendricks and Olivia Johnson to take a 3-2 lead over the Lions.  However, the Lions would not let the Warriors walk away easily as kills by Julie de Blanck allowed Emmanuel to tie Southern Wesleyan 5-5.  The set went back-and-fourth with kills and strong defensive plays by both sides to keep it close.  The Warriors pushed ahead with kills by Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson to tie the set 21-21.  A kill by Courtney Price, off a set by Annika Jones, allowed the Warriors to win the third set 25-23.

Set Four

Emmanuel broke out early in the fourth set to quickly take a 3-0 lead before a kill by Olivia Johnson put Southern Wesleyan on the board.  The Warriors kept the final set close with a kill by Olivia Johnson, but back-to-back kills by the Lions allowed Emmanuel to take a 10-6 point advantage.  The Lions fought ahead, despite kills by Olivia Johnson and Darby Sheets to win the final set 25-12.

 

What's Next

Southern Wesleyan will next travel to Bristol, Tennessee to take on the King Tornado on October 19.  They will then return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium as they kick of Homecoming Week with Faculty / Staff Appreciation Night against UNC Pembroke on October 23.
