Bristol, TN – Southern Wesleyan fell in a close match to the King Tornado Friday evening.
The Warriors posted 37 kills in the loss to the Tornado with Olivia Johnson recorded 20. Annika Jones led the team with 31 assists. Four Warriors had aces and Annika Jones led the team with four blocks. Southern Wesleyan put up 66 digs with Katie Anderson recording 20. Anderson was followed with Johnson and Haley Martin with 11 digs each.

How It Happened
The King Tornado took an early lead, but the Warriors countered with kills by Courtney Price and Davis Hendricks gave Southern Wesleyan a 2-1 lead. The Tornado countered, but the Warriors would not be stopped with kills by Olivia Johnson to allow Southern Wesleyan to stay on top. Kills by Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson, along with blocks by Johnson and Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to maintain their lead. Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure the Tornado with a service ace by Olivia Johnson and kills by Darby Sheets to give the Warriors a 25-21 victory.
The Tornado pushed out early with kills by Kayley Holtzclaw and Tristyn Lorano to give King a 4-0 lead. Southern Wesleyan countered to cut their lead to 5-3 with a kill by Sarah Stone. The Tornado charged ahead despite kills by Olivia Johnson and Stone. Kills by Annika Jones and Johnson were not enough as the Tornado won the second set 25-12.
King took an early 1-0 lead in the third set, but a service error put Southern Wesleyan on the board to tie the set 1-1. The Warriors took a 2-1 lead on a service ace by Annika Jones, but the Tornado countered with kills by Julie Ward and Rebekah Hill to take a 3-2 lead. Southern Wesleyan countered with a kill by Darby Sheets and ace by Sarah Stone to put them behind the Tornado 4-5. The Warriors pushed ahead with kills by Olivia Johnson to take an 8-7 point lead. The Warriors continued to push ahead with kills by Darby Sheets to give them a 15-12 point advantage. King fought back to win the set 25-20.
The Tornado took the first point in the fourth set on a kill by Tristyn Lozano. Attack errors by the Tornado allowed the Warriors to get on the board and but Southern Wesleyan down 3-7 to King. Kills by Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to come to 9-10 behind the Tornado in the fourth set. Southern Wesleyan continued to fight back with a kill by Sarah Stone to make the score 11-13. A kill by Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to cut the Tornado lead to 13-16. The Tornado pushed ahead to win the final set 25-20.
Southern Wesleyan will return to Historic Tysinger Gymnasium on October 23 as the host UNC Pembroke. The Warriors will host Faculty / Staff Appreciation and their Block-Out Breast Cancer event during the game. The Warriors will remain at home on October 26 and 27 as they host their Homecoming games against the Barton Bulldogs and the Mount Olive Trojans.
