Central, SC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Barton Bulldogs in a heartbreaker on Friday evening in a 3-2 final.
The Warriors recorded 29 kills in the loss with sophomore Olivia Johnson leading the team with 13. Senior setter Annika Jones recorded 25 of the 29 assists. Southern Wesleyan had six aces with Anna Martin leading the team with two. Three Warriors recorded double digits in digs. Johnson led the team with 20 digs. She was followed by Katie Anderson with 18 and Annika Jones with 13. Southern Wesleyan boasted 15 blocks with both Courtney Price and Johnson leading the team with five.

How It Happened
The Bulldogs took the first point of the game, but a kill by Danairi Malave and an ace by Annika Jones put the Warriors on to 3-1. Attack errors by Barton allowed Southern Wesleyan to push ahead. The Bulldogs countered but a kill by Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to take a 7-6 point advantage. Barton tied the set again and then pulled ahead, but a kill by Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to tie it up 10-10. A kill by Olivia Johnson and an ace by Katie Anderson allowed the Warriors to push ahead to a 18-13 point lead. Southern Wesleyan went on to win the first set 25-17.
Barton took an early 2-0 lead, but a kill by Danairi Malave allowed Southern Wesleyan to cut their lead to 2-1. The Bulldogs continued to press ahead, but a kill and ace by Courtney Price allowed the Warriors to take a 9-8 point advantage over Barton. Kills by Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to take a 14-11 point lead. Attack errors by the Bulldogs allowed the Warriors to lengthen their lead. Kills by Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to win the second set 25-17.
The Bulldogs took an early lead in the third set before a kill by Davis Hendricks allowed the Warriors to cut Barton's lead to 3-2. Barton pulled away with kills by Kelsey Riquelme and Camryn Frederick to take an 8-4 point lead. Southern Wesleyan continued to fight back with kills by Darby Sheets and Olivia Johnson, but Barton won the third set 25-21.
A service error by the Bulldogs put the Warriors up 1-0, but Barton regained the lead with kills by Kaytlin Elkins and Kelsey Riquelme. The Warriors rallied back with a service ace by Anna Martin to take a 6-4 point lead. However, the Bulldogs would not go down without a fight as they rallied back to tie the set 15-15 on a kill by Kaytlin Elkins. Southern Wesleyan continued to pressure with kills by Olivia Johnson and Danairi Malave to put the Warriors down 22-20. Despite an ace by Haley Martin and kill by Johnson, the Bulldogs won the fourth set 26-24.
The Bulldogs charged ahead in the fifth and final set, but several attack errors by Barton and a kill by Danairi Malave allowed the Warriors to take a 6-5 point lead. A kill by Olivia Johnson allowed Southern Wesleyan to maintain a 9-8 point advantage. However, Barton pressed on to win the final set 15-10.
Southern Wesleyan will remain at Historic Tysinger Gymnasium as they take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 2 p.m. on October 27. They will recognize their seniors following the match. The Warriors will then travel to UNC Pembroke on October 30 at 7 p.m. They will close out the 2018 regular season on November 3 as they host the North Greenville Crusaders in Historic Tysinger Gymnasium.
