Belmont, NC – Southern Wesleyan fell to the Belmont Abbey Crusaders in a 3-1 final on Tuesday evening.
The Warriors had 32 kills in the loss to the Crusaders. Olivia Johnson led the team with 11 and Courtney Price followed with nine. Annika Jones had 26 of the 32 assists of the evening. Johnson led the team with four of the eight aces. Four Warriors posted double digits in digs, with Johnson leading the team with 23. Danairi Malave led the team with three of the 10 blocks.

How It Happened
Southern Wesleyan jumped out early as Olivia Johnson laid down a kill off a pass from Annika Jones to put the Warriors on top 1-0. An ace by Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to lengthen their lead to 3-0. A kill by Mackenzie Chrapliwy put Belmont Abbey on the board, however a kill by Courtney Price allowed Southern Wesleyan to take a 5-1 lead. The Crusaders pressured back as a kill by Brianna Morgheim allowed them to come to 7-3 behind the Warriors. Belmont Abbey continued to pressure back to come to 7-8 behind Southern Wesleyan on a kill by Chrapliwy. Olivia Johnson put down a kill that the Crusaders could not handle to give the Warriors a 10-7 point advantage. Southern Wesleyan continued to push ahead as Courtney Price put down a kill to give them a 16-13 lead. Back-to-back kills by Katie Anderson put the Warriors lead at 18-14. Southern Wesleyan took the first set 25-18.
The Warriors took an early lead in the second set off a kill by Danairi Malave, but Belmont Abbey countered seconds later with a kill by Mackenzie Chrapliwy to tie it 1-1. However, the Warriors countered with a kill by Olivia Johnson to take a 2-1 lead. A service ace by Annika Jones allowed the Warriors to lengthen their lead to 4-1. The Crusaders fought back on kills by Brianna Morgheim to come to 6-5 behind the Warriors. Southern Wesleyan continued to press on with three service aces by Olivia Johnson to give them a 10-5 point lead over the Crusaders. The Crusaders tied it up 10-10 on a kill by Morgheim and then took an 11-10 point lead on a kill by Cassidy Bonito. Belmont Abbey fought ahead, but Courtney Price and Katie Anderson put down kills to allow Southern Wesleyan to tie it up 13-13. Despite a kill by Danairi Malave, Belmont Abbey took an 18-14 point advantage over Southern Wesleyan. Blocks by Courtney Price and Davis Hendricks and a service ace by Anna Martin allowed the Warriors to come to 19-23 behind the Crusaders. Belmont Abbey won the second set 25-20.

Southern Wesleyan would not go down quietly as an ace by Olivia Johnson and a kill by Katie Anderson allowed them to come to 12-14 behind Belmont Abbey. The Crusaders won the third set 25-15.

The Crusaders continued to push ahead with kills by Carie Jane Valentine to take a 9-3 point lead. Attack errors by Belmont Abbey allowed Southern Wesleyan to shorten the gap to make the score 6-9. Kills by Sarah Stone and Olivia Johnson put the Warriors down 8-10 to the Crusaders. Southern Wesleyan would not go down quietly as a kill by Olivia Johnson allowed the Warriors to tie the fourth set 10-10. Belmont Abbey fought back to lead 20-14 on a kill by Brianna Morgheim. A kill by Courtney Price put Southern Wesleyan down 22-16. The Crusaders went on to win 25-17.
